Default 2011 Audi A8s will be tail gated constantly

Your EVO 4G, EPIC, DROID 2, and DROID X all have hotspot capabilities when they leave the factory. So why not your car? Audi has announced that they will have a factory installed “Marvell Mobile Hotspot” built-in to the new 2011 Audi A8 that is set to debut later this year. The hotspot will allow you to connect up to eight devices to your car, bringing sweet, sweet eyes-off-the-road internet capabilities to your German luxury sedan. The hotspot works by installing a data capable SIM into the A8’s car-phone or by connecting to a device equipped with the SIM Access Profile. Marvell has said the technology is “optimized for extremely low power consumption on battery-powered consumer electronics, enabling passengers to connect to the vehicle’s network without affecting the battery life of their connected devices.” Pricing for the 2011 model has not yet been announced, but the 2010 A8 has a base MSRP of $78,400. I better start writing some more blog posts!

I wonder when Lexus will do something like this.

Interesting.

I'm not entirely sure how I feel about this; as a driver I could care less and wouldn't elect this option but if I were a passenger I suppose I would be all excited.

Good idea, especially for the driven, but I am still waiting on the execution, price, and monthly cost.

Anyone else see the specs on this car? 4.2L V8 remains, 8 speed auto, 17/27 MPG, up from 16/23. Noice!

Wow. The first baby step towards networking cars in traffic?

Great, so on top of all the distractions people have while driving, soon cars will be "networked" with each other and drivers will be busy being on the internet while behind the wheel and stuck in traffic? Yikes . IMHO there is no need for this even if you DO want internet in your car.

A lot of internet service providers already provide "anywhere" internet availability even in areas with no cellphone service or coverage.

What's next? Where does one draw the line here?

If that was in response to my post, I meant the first baby step towards networking traffic. I totally agree that internet in cars along with front seat video are unneeded distractions.

But it is not inconceivable that tomorrow's cars will be able to communicate with each other to a certain degree for whatever reasons. This web portal seems like a plausible entry into that realm using today's technology.

Yep... they sure did. The only difference is that Audi will gouge the hell out of you for the option... Lemmings...

this is pretty irrelevant given that smartphones are already internet connected. however, cars being internet connected makes a WHOLE LOT OF SENSE. how about never having to put a stupid DVD or HD update to get your nav current? how about music play doing live lookups on track databases for info on screen. how about automatic availability of all kinds of info everywhere, or ability, via voice command perhaps, so make a reservation while you drive.

internet connected cars... inevitable, and no greater a distraction than cell phones, navigation systems, a radio, passengers, or annoying kids in the back.
