Quote: RX = Rally SUV
GX = Grand SUV
LX = Luxury SUV

Technically, if Lexus is like other automakers, the "X" stands for AWD/4WD.

The general idea is that if it's RWD, it's sporty.

I believe the S used to be "sedan" for all the models in the early years.

Now that Lexus is evolving, it's using "sport" to address any issues with coupes, wagons, and convertibles in the future.

^^^LS came out in the 90s and in no way was it marketed as SPORT

IS = Intelligent Sport

so if you buy the IS over the 3 series and the C class, then you're intelligent?

I'm sorry, but I can't grasp the meaning behind these letterings

I dont think that applies here, because the RX can be had in FWD. And then there is the fact that the IS and GS AWD isnt called the ISX and GSX

You think Lexus is difficult? Try Mercedes:

Quote:
SL= sportlich, leicht (sport, light)
SLK = sportlich, leicht, kompact (or kurtz, which means short)

SLR = sportlich, leicht, rennsport (sport, light, racing)

CL = comfort leicht
CLK = comfort leicht kompact

CLS = comfort leicht saloon

C = Compact (it's an English abbreviation, when introduced in 1993, by DaimlerChrysler)

E = Einspritzung (actually stands for "fuel injection" )

S = Sonderklasse (Special Class)

G = Geländewagen (stands for cross-country wagon)
GL = well, here's the deal. The GL-Class was supposed to replace the G-Class, but decided to keep both in 2006. The L differentiated the two vehicles.

M = no particular meaning. Perhaps Midsize SUV, made by DaimlerChrysler.

R, A, and B = no particular meanings.
