Neat pic. My wife owned a 92 Miata and it was a fun car. The MX-5's headlights seem to be just a bit bigger than the 1st gen's parking lights.

Here's an even bigger difference between the first Miata and what you can get today:

To be honest, though, except for very few circumstances, I can't imagine why anyone without a bad right arm or shoulder would spring for the power-retractible hardtop. True, the power hard-top makes the car harder to break into, and provides a little better all-weather protection, but the standard manual flip-top is not only a model of simplicity but is well-made and does a pretty fair job of keeping out cold and rain. The later-versions of the manual top have only one windshield-mount snap-lever (instead of two like the older ones), and a much more durable/craze-proof, defrosted, glass rear window instead of plastic. The later manual tops are a snap.......literally. With my right arm alone , I myself have unsnapped the single windshield lever, flipped the top back over the seats, and dropped it down behind me........all in 3 seconds (most taller people can do it in under 5 seconds). So, in most cases, why pay more for the electric hard-top?

The ease of the standard manual top, BTW, and the availability of the power top for those who want it, are two BIG reasons why the Miata has consistantly outsold the Pontiac Solstice and Saturn Sky (which have awkward-to-operate manual tops). A third reason, of course, is the Miata's build quality, which has always been high.

Both look great. Different as the years progress. Almost like the 911

Whats amazing, is that the current MX-5 didn't grow all that much and didn't become another bloated pig. Thumbs up!

FYI I didn't start the thread to make fun of them. Today I have a higher respect for the MX5 than ever before. It truly is a throwback to purity. Manual, RWD, small dimensions, low weight.

Kudos to Mazda.

I actually like every generation and I don't mind the facelift either. bitkahuna took me for a "spirited" run in his and it really was awesome. Two 6"5 guys flying in a Miata
