So I'm giving my old car to my brother, but I can't find the title. Can it be resolved right there and then if we both go to DMV? He needs the car ASAP, and if I request a new title, it might take a long time to receive it.

 

In Michigan, I would have to go to one of the special Secretary of State (DMV) offices that issues instant titles with ID and proof of vehicle ownership. I could then execute the sale to a family member and there would be no sales tax on the sales.

YMMV in NY.

 

Florida is the same way. You can get a quick title same day at certain offices.
