Default Next gen M3 to get TT I6 motor

It's been over five years since the E90 BMW 3 Series was introduced, and according to Automobile, the all-new bread-and-butter Bimmer is set to hit the market in 2012. Codenamed F30, the next 3er is reportedly set to employ the F20 1 Series' front strut layout instead of the 5, 6 and 7 Series double wishbone arrangement. But the new underpinnings aren't the real news.

Five body styles will make up the 2012 3 Series: The standard sedan, wagon, coupe and convertible (each coming out about six months after the former's introduction), along with a Gran Turismo model in 2013. The slant-roof five-door we've reported on previously will take cues from the 5 Series that shares the same name, but will feature a one-piece hatch unlike it's bigger brother's two-piece unit.

Automobile also reports that the next two-door will feature bespoke sheetmetal with a more canted windshield, lower roofline and sculpted flanks, while the convertible will continue to use a retractable hardtop instead of a canvas roof.

Naturally, the M division is hard at work on the next M3, and it's likely to drop the 420-horsepower V8 in favor of a twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter inline six putting out around 450 hp. There's a slight – very slight – possibility that M could develop a "Speedster" variant of the 3 Series with a fabric roof and cut-down windshield, and BMW is looking into creating a three-door shooting brake 3 Series, which we whole-heartedly approve.

Long live the V8 M3.

wow that was fast for the V8 to come in and be gone so fast
i guess the M3 sales just wasnt what they expected it to be?

dont blame them, IS-F and C63 and even CTS-V put on some tough competition

this shooting brake idea could play out very well
or very poorly seeing how the 5 series GT turned out

Interesting article. I've always felt the best BMW engineers prefer to work on inline 6's and the best Porsche engineers prefer to work on flat 6's.

If the TT engine keep insanely high redline of the current V8, then its all good, but macperson strut suspension?! Are they mad?

I was actually really pumped when they decided to chop the S85 for the M3. I hope it stays, but given the S85 has been shown the door, that is not likely.

nothing to do with m3 sales imho. from what i can tell m3 sales are pretty strong actually, see quite a lot of them on the road (two of my neighbors got m3 too). of course i am not discounting competition from amg and such, but don't think that's the reason for the engine change

the main problem is emission i think, since everything got stricter and FI will be more fuel efficient.

another reason would be design, continue to go NA and high rev is getting very tough. i remember when they came out with the 400hp v8 in the e39 m5, they already said it's getting close to their "limit" in producing a reliable street use engine with the kind of performance. that's also why with the e60 they went straight to v10 to achieve the 500hp.

i am just glad i got to own a NA m car, it's something else. it sux, i still remember years ago when bmw said they will not deviate away from NA for their m cars...

i highly doubt that, with tt setup, most likely that will introduce stronger higher tq output on lower rpm, and at the same time bringing down the redline

I am hoping Lexus brings out something twin turbo....a return to inline engines would be interesting. Looks like TT are going to be the next big thing in the luxury segment

This will definitely make the E90 a future collector

The M3 (since E30) has always used MacPherson struts. It seems to be good at what it does

Are you sure? The regular 3 series is double wishbone, right?

Many people often confuse strut setup, in which spring is mounted over the shock but the whole assembly only its direct purpose, with MacPerson strut, where the strut assembly also serves the purpose of the upper control arm, which it replaces.

Perhaps they are going with the machperson's to save manufacturing costs as well as horizontal room in the engine bay and probably a little but of unsprung weight? I wonder how they will deal with the camber during turns though?

I'm happy I have the M I do, I think the M is going to be going through some 'interesting' changes here over the next few gens ...

V8 - I6 TT - ... ?

However, I guess this is a better direction than the V8. I guess.

+1. I love my M and I am not surprised they are changing it. I do think fuel is the reason. We shall see.
