Toyota, Honda Lead Increase in Japan’s January Vehicle Sales
Share Business ExchangeTwitterFacebook| Email | Print | A A A

By Kiyori Ueno

Feb. 1 (Bloomberg) -- Toyota Motor Corp. and Honda Motor Co., Japan’s two biggest automakers, led the sixth straight increase in the nation’s monthly auto sales as government incentives spurred demand.

Sales of cars, trucks and buses, excluding minicars, rose 37 percent from a year earlier to 238,362 vehicles in January, the Japan Automobile Dealers Association said in a statement today. Toyota boosted sales to 117,154 vehicles, excluding Lexus-brand cars. The company’s recent recalls of vehicles for faulty accelerator pedals don’t include models sold in Japan.

Japan’s auto sales began recovering from a yearlong slide in August as government rebates and tax cuts for fuel-efficient vehicles helped rekindle demand. The incentives helped raise sales by about 600,000 vehicles last year and may increase them by about 900,000 this year, the Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association said on Dec. 24.

Domestic sales rose 65 percent at Honda in January, while Nissan Motor Co., Japan’s third-largest automaker, sold 24 percent more vehicles.

Under a government program that began in June, consumers can apply for a 250,000 yen ($2,800) subsidy if they scrap a car more than 13 years old to buy a new one, and 100,000 yen for a new car purchased without scrapping an older vehicle. The subsidies are available retroactively for purchases from April 10. The government has extended the program, which was initially set to expire at the end of March, for six months until September.

Electric, hybrid, natural-gas, and some diesel vehicles also qualify for an exemption from the country’s weight and purchase taxes.

Japan’s vehicle sales may rise 4.1 percent to 4.8 million units in 2010, according to the Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association.

Honda Canada Reports January Sales Results

TORONTO, Feb. 2 /CNW/ - Combined January sales of 6,393 units by the Honda and Acura divisions represented a 15% decline over last year. The Honda Automobile Division reported December sales of 5,677 units, down 12% from last year. The Acura Division reported January sales of 716 units, down 35% from last year.

"Despite our sales being down this month, we picked up momentum in the last 10 days with the introduction of our new 'Winter Warm-Up Event' marketing campaign that includes new financing rates of 0.9 per cent on three of our most popular models - Civic, CR-V and Accord," said Jerry Chenkin, executive vice president of Honda Canada Inc. "Canadians are responding positively to this new campaign, which we expect to generate stronger sales in February."

Honda Canada Inc. has sold more than 3,300,000 Honda and Acura passenger cars and light-duty trucks in Canada over the past 37 years. A record high 91 per cent of the Honda and Acura vehicles sold in Canada in 2009 were produced at the company's assembly plants in North America, up nearly 3 per cent from 2008. In addition, 52 per cent of all Honda and Acura vehicles sold in Canada last year were built at the two Honda of Canada Mfg. plants in Alliston, Ontario.

Record January sales for Subaru Canada

http://finance.yahoo.com/news/Record....html?x=0&.v=1
MISSISSAUGA, ON, Feb. 2 /CNW/ - Subaru Canada, Inc. (SCI) is pleased to announce that it set a new record for January results. Total sales of its lineup of Subaru symmetrical full-time All-Wheel Drive vehicles climbed to 1,729 units, up 45.8 percent over last January. These record-breaking results surpassed the previous record, set in 2008, by 527 units and 43.8 percent. This strong start to the new year confirms that Subaru's Canadian sales are continuing to grow faster than any other Japanese auto manufacturer in 2010.

It was also the best January ever for Forester and Outback models: Forester sales were up 26.8 percent, and sales of the all-new Outback rose by 382.9 percent as compared to the same month last year.

"Subaru's sales momentum is continuing to build in 2010 due to the quality, durability and reliability of our vehicles," said Katsuhiro Yokoyama, president and CEO of SCI. "Subaru was recently named the top mainstream brand in ALG's (Automotive Lease Guide) Canadian Residual Value Awards, and we're also the only manufacturer with 2010 IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) Top Safety Picks for every model. These important honours serve to reinforce consumer confidence in our award-winning lineup of vehicles."

Subaru Canada, Inc. is a wholly owned subsidiary of Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd. of Japan. Headquartered in Mississauga, Ontario, the company markets and distributes Subaru vehicles, parts and accessories through a network of 86 authorized dealers across Canada.

Ford US auto sales jump 24 percent in January

(AFP) – 1 hour ago

CHICAGO — Ford Motor Co. posted a 24 percent jump in January US auto sales on Tuesday and estimated its market share grew by two points from a year earlier.

The gains follow strong growth in recent months and came after rival Toyota was forced to suspend sales on some of its most popular models in the wake of a massive recall due to faulty accelerator pedals.

"People increasingly are discovering that the Ford difference is the strength of our products, particularly our leadership in quality, fuel efficiency, safety, smart technologies and value," said Ken Czubay, Ford vice president for US marketing, sales and service.

Ford estimated that its total sales of 112,406 vehicles in January would result in a US market share of about 16 percent.

The second largest US automaker said higher sales for every brand and in every product category propelled the growth.

Cars sales were up 43 percent, crossovers were up 20 percent, sport utilities were up eight percent, and trucks and vans were up 14 percent.

Among brands, Ford sales were up 26 percent, Lincoln sales were up 16 percent and Mercury sales were up six percent.

Sales to government, commercial and rental fleets were up 154 percent from last January's depressed levels when purchases were deferred due to the credit crunch and economic crisis.

Sales at Volvo, which Ford is in the midst of selling to China's Geely, were up 42 percent at 4,128 vehicles.

Ford, which unlike General Motors and Chrysler was able to survive the industry's worst year in decades without resorting to bankruptcy and government bailouts, posted its first annual profit since 2005 last week.

The company reported net earnings of 2.7 billion dollars profit for 2009 and said it expects to be profitable in 2010 and 2011.

The results represent a stunning comeback for Ford after years of painful restructuring and bleeding balance sheets.

Ford also managed to post its first annual market share gain since 1995 last year.

Mercedes-Benz USA (MBUSA) today reported January sales of 15,158 vehicles, a 45.
3% improvement over January 2009,
starting 2010 with robust momentum.

Strong demand in both the Mercedes sedan and light-truck categories fueled the increase in sales volume for the month. In the sedan category, the popularity of the C-Class – the gateway to the Mercedes-Benz brand for younger and first-time Mercedes-Benz buyers – maintained its lead as the volume leader with sales of 4,028, up 32.8% over January 2009. The all-new, 9th generation E-Class continued to shine with sales of 3,824, up an astounding 116.3% over January 2009.

As further proof of the Mercedes-Benz competitive presence in the luxury light truck market, the champion M-Class reported sales of 1,927, up 42.2% over last January; the sporty GLK followed suit with sales of 1,803, up 38.7% - beating its launch numbers of 1,300 posted in January 2009.

Separately, through the Mercedes-Benz Certified Pre-Owned (MBCPO) program, MBUSA sold 6,229 vehicles in January; a 7.8 percent decrease compared to January 2009 with sales of 6,753 vehicles.

Quick reminder that EVERYONE'S sales should go up substantially as last January and year was dismal.

We will see what if any affect the recall had on Toyota.

Toyota Canada was down 10% in January. Back when Toyota was hit hard, Toyota held steady so if Toyota Canada is down then I suspect Toyota USA should be hit pretty hard

Acura complete fail. ZDX not close to the 500 units a month. TL is under 2k units as is the TSX.

Lol at people saying last year it was inventory and production. lol

http://www.earthtimes.org/articles/s...,1147796.shtml

TORRANCE, Calif., Feb. 2 /PRNewswire/ -- Total Acura sales for January reached 7,132, off 1.7 percent versus January 2009, based on the daily selling rate*. The MDX luxury SUV posted a 20.3 percent increase for January and was the best-selling Acura model for the month with sales of 2,358 units.

"The significant enhancements made to the MDX this year have kept it front and center in the luxury SUV segment," said Jeff Conrad, vice president of Acura sales. "With its bold new styling, added performance and technology upgrades, the MDX continues to set a high standard."

The TL performance luxury sedan posted January sales of 1,986 units and was the top-selling Acura sedan for the month. The TSX sports sedan reached monthly sales of 1,806 units. The RDX turbocharged SUV sold 700 units for the month. In its first full month on sale, the ZDX four-door sports coupe posted sales of 172 units.

Lol at the marketing spin. 2300 MDX sold is not the center of anything.

Volkswagen of America Announces January Sales

HERNDON, Va., Feb. 2 /PRNewswire/ -- Volkswagen of America, Inc. today reported January 2010 sales of 18,019 total units, representing a 41.4 percent increase over January 2009. January marks Volkswagen's seventh consecutive sales month of growth.

Jetta, the top selling European nameplate in the U.S., continued to sell well and posted solid January sales results with sales of 8,893 total units. Proving that today's consumers continue to place greater emphasis on fuel efficiency and the environment, Volkswagen's clean diesel TDI models continue to gain market acceptance and accounted for 2,447 units.

Volkswagen's eye-catching CC, which blends sports car dynamics with the dimensions and comfort of a sedan, once again posted strong January results with sales of 1,891 units. Also posting strong January results is Volkswagen's latest generation Golf and GTI with sales of 1,545 units. The Tiguan, the GTI of compact SUV's, also performed well with January sales results of 1,424 units. All four models exemplify what the brand is all about -- attainable, fun-to-drive, and stylish German engineering

"We are pleased by the strong start to 2010," said Mark Barnes, Chief Operating Officer, Volkswagen of America, Inc. "It's encouraging to see so many of Volkswagen's newest models continuing to gain momentum in the market place -- namely the CC, Tiguan, Golf and GTI."

Volkswagen of America, Inc.

Founded in 1955, Volkswagen of America, Inc. is headquartered in Herndon, Virginia. It is a subsidiary of Volkswagen AG, headquartered in Wolfsburg, Germany. Volkswagen is one of the world's largest producers of passenger cars and Europe's largest automaker. Volkswagen sells the Eos, Golf, New Beetle, New Beetle convertible, GTI, Jetta, Jetta SportWagen, Passat, Passat wagon, CC, Tiguan, Touareg and Routan through approximately 600 independent U.S. dealers.
