My guess is 15-20 years for this attitude shift. We'll start seeing offerings from a Chinese electric car company based out of California within the next decade.

Exactly, reverse engineering, the Japanese used to do that better anyone. They would take a competitor's car apart and learn from it and try to copy it ot improve on it. Its human nature, why do it again when its already been done.

Seriously. I drove 2 different GM rental cars over the past holiday. Total crap. World's most un-ergonomic control layout. And, hands down, the absolute DUMBEST cruise control system in the world!!
My Lexus has the same stubby cruise-control stalk that my mom's Camry does. Why? Because it works...beautifully.
