I would go for the Golf (although I'd prefer the A3 TDI ). I do mostly freeways and that's where diesels excel. Although when I was stuck in traffic yesterday a hybrid would've been nice...

Prius is larger, significantly more fuel efficient, allows for cheaper maintence items such as never having to replace the hydraulic brakes, significantly "greener", cheaper, and uses cheaper gas. Last summer when gasonline was $4 a gallon, diesel was $5 here. Thus, it would be longer to see your return for spending extra dough on the car, which is the entire point of these cars.

I wouldn't call a Prius fun to drive, but I've never driven a Jetta that I liked, or thought even had an element of sportiness to it. Chances are the diesel engine will run for many miles, but the speedometer, radio, power door locks, etc. will crap out after 50k.

Golf TDI Ftw!

better handling
better resale value
more exclusive
better looking - subjective
same equipped option , TDI is cheaper
$1700 Tax Credit

Plus, I remember reading somewhere that MK6 Golf is top rated safety small compact car

That doesn't mean that they have a better resale value. It means that the Jetta TDI costs more to begin with, which it does. VW also lowered the price when the new TDI came out. The previous one commanded an even greater premium.

Nah, its more like comparing a Corolla to a Civic, the VW is a bit better handling but its no A3.

Turbo and electronics can be replace, the important thing is the engine and the chassis. Last time I check, diesel has really come down in price here in the North east, almost the same price as super unleaded.

I like both diesels and hybrids. For me, I would go with the Prius. I find the Golf as appealing as a lead sandwich. The Prius is quirky, I love the interior, its like nothing else and it gets a legitimate 50 MPG easy.
R35Yang you are forgetting some points. For once there are options on the Prius not even a Tourag has let alone a Golf. Some options the Prius has is a
solar roof
LEDs
Rear camera
much better NAV
17" wheels
more cargo capacity
yadda yadda
quiter
more technology
less NVH
smart key
more room
Prius got a 5 side impact rating to the TDI 4
Radar Cruise
Pre Collision
Lane keep assist
Intelligent parking
So there are pros and cons to both.
