Air conditioned seats question

I've been searching for this all over and can't find anything. Is the AC system in the seats of cars a closed system not related to the AC under the hood? Does it use gas when it's cool air, or is it electric like when you warm the seats?

I'm talking about the seats with the vents that blow the air, not the new thermoelectric system the LS uses. Thanks!

It's closed in the sense that it just blows air from under the seat into the seats...at least on the GS.

What car are you talking about? The GS for instance uses fans but the LS literally is connected to the AC to cool your nuts.
