Five months ago, someone cobbled together a spoof video about an iPhone app that could remotely unlock and start a car. Oh, how we laughed. Now, take one guess at what Viper SmartStart, an iPhone app announced today, actually does.
The free app connects to a Viper SmartStart hardware module installed in your car, and controls five basic functions: It'll start your car, turn on the heat, unlock your doors or trunk, and manage the car alarm. The range is effectively infinite too, since all communication is carried out over cell networks—no line of sight contact necessary, not that the iPhone has the IR hardware for anything like that anyway.

Sort of like the unlocking feature through Onstar, BMW Assist, TeleAid etc. in reverse. This time, you can do it on your own through your I-phone.. Audi showcased this technology at the NYIAS. It will be available in their upcoming cars. Amazing technology.
Amazing! When is Verizon going to have the iPhone??? I wonder how this would work for multiple remotes and remote start and/or multiple cars? I do see the pitfalls of thieves and scenarios such as losing your phone, but its still pretty amazing none-the-less.

It'll be even better when they add GPS tracking. Sucks that you have to pay $30/yr for the (cell) service for the car module, but don't count on this if you don't have cell service where the car/you is/are located. Since this is an add-on module, hopefully it can work with existing Viper alarm/starter systems. Screen shots implies it can handle multiple cars.
I have to get a new phone. I am still using a razor phone. Yes, a razor. I am amazed at the number of applications the i phone has available. They have a dyno application that will tell you the power your car is putting out for gods sake
i have a viper alarm on my turbo IS and its suppsed to have remote start although since i ahve had the car i have been able to do that. I wonder if this would work with that. Looks liek i would need the gay module thing ehh for $300 i could buy some real upgrades but it is cool.
