X1, 1 series and 0 series are there for volume volume volume. BMW HAS to sell more cars and you do that by going downmarket. BMW also is trying niches like the X6 and 5 series GT which don't sell in large numbers but since they are based on existing cars, they can be profitable pretty quickly.
To save money the "new" X1 is based on the current 3 series platform. The next X3 will be based on the new 3 series platform. It actually will debut with the new "3" platform before the actual 3 series.
Exactly. BMW has the Mini brand, why not create another brand?
B/C people buy BMWs no matter what. BMW is keenly aware of this so why not sell anything you can badged BMW. I think its a smart move from a sales standpoint.
Looking at the 1 series, it really hasn't done anything to damage the BMW reputation here, though they were smart not sending us the feeble engines and the 3/5 door hatches.
