I have seen diesel ( VW polo) that can get 74 mpg. We are still not doing enough. When gas prices dropped everyone thinks this is permanent and kind of forgot about the issue
I can appreciate BMW offering another engine option, this one I believe from the 116d. I just don't see anyone buying this in America. We both know certains cars are great for certain markets and would fail elsewhere.

You are right on this. The BMW 316d has no chance in the USA. It might work in some busy parts of Canada but it has no chance in the USA. There are tons of small car offerings in Germany which will just not work in USA.
BMW putting the 1.8 litre diesel is like Toyota putting the 1.5 liter Yaris engine in the Avalon Platinum model and then trying to sell it .... it just won't work.
With the amount of miles that Americans drive on the highway, sometimes I wonder why clean diesel is not more popular than Hybrids in the US. Maybe it is because of the great job Toyota and Lexus is doing in marketing the hybrid.
