I wish the rented the FJ instead of the wrangler. I opted for the slightly less ****ty mustang convertible on this last trip and I hated it almost as much. . There is very little attention to detail, design cues and ergonomics are horrible, and functionally the cars are very very basic.
The Wrangler is definitely not a great road vehicle. With that said you can't find a more trail capable stock vehicle currently in the US than the Wrangler Rubicon.

I just sold my built '05 Unlimited Rubicon because I don't have the time to travel to good trails these days. Here is a pic of my old Jeep.

I agree that the Wrangler is a much better dedicated off road vehicle than the FJ... but on road the FJ is much better. Deals on Wranglers right now are ridiculous. The FJ costs many thousands more with comparable equipment.

Very much like a H3, and that's not a bad thing.

What's really selling quite well in this class of 4wd vehicles is the 4 door Jeep Wrangler.

I'm also not sure how much better of an off-roader the FJ is than the 4runner, but it's not really an issue since our 4runner has never been off road.

Did Toyota get the issue sorted out with the sheet metal having structural tears in it? Do those issues also apply to the 4runner? I remember reading about it but never really followed up on it to see if it might affect our 4runner.
the 4runner is an SUV, the FJ is an off road inspired vehicle. the chasis is reinforced, the suspension is met for offroad, the ground clearance, the skid plates, transmission, even the exhaust cleareance. the differential, etc.
I tell you what, the 4runner V8 is a beast. even the V6 is fast as crap for an SUV

By the chassis I guess you mean the suspension? I believe the frame is identical between the 4runner, FJ, and Taco, but if I'm wrong I'd love to know what's different for educational purposes.

The FJ frame is based off the Prado, not the 4Runner.

Are those two not also the same? What would I see different about the frame if I crawled under the FJ and 4R?

Even though it's bulky and odd looking, I have always loved the FJ

yea the FJ frame is the same one as the Land Cruiser Prado, but it is reinforced in some extra spots for off road purposes

IMO the FJ is not a good looking vehicle when is stock. It asmost as if it was made to be modded. kinda like a Scion from toyota too.
Including my brother's ive seen some modded FJ's and they look meas as hell.

If you drive an FJ an its stock you should go to jail

needs more mud.

and i never understood why toyota decide to make those taillights bulge out like that...it'd get destroyed in a second on the trails.

I have to say the FJ is my favorite toyota product!! It looks great and it gets the job done too. This one is missing a nice set of bull bars and a snorkel.

Well I did some googling around and everything I've seen says the suspension and frame on the LC Prado 120, FJ, and 4Runner are all nearly identical.

I suspect that it's simply popular in the FJ community to say that the SUV has roots in something sold overseas with the Land Cruiser branding on it... it sounds a lot cooler than saying you drive a funky looking 4runner.
