Whether you, anyone else, or Hyundai likes it or not, Genesis is in the entry-level segment (at best). You can argue just as much that Genesis is not even in the true luxury segment, but the near-luxury segment.

GS sales were suffering way before the Genesis came out.

I'd bet you anything that Genesis sales are NOT a direct hit to Lexus. I bet you Genesis sales are more of a direct hit to Buick, Infiniti, Volvo, Acura, and Lincoln. Before you bring up Lincoln sales figures, Lincoln is attracting a lot of new customers, a lot of people are downgrading from other brands to Lincoln, which would offset the impact the Genesis would have on the brand.
Has Hyundai ever reported or mentioned conquest sales numbers for the Genesis? Typically manufacturers like to report conquest sales for their products, if a significant amount of conquest sales exists.

Here's the mid-sized luxury numbers (including Genesis numbers for analysis) since the MKS and Genesis went on sale last summer. Draw your own conclusions.

Wow, nice data SICK. The Camry is very close to overtaking the Silverado for the #2 sales spot. Amazing. Also interesting that Civic sales percentage-wise are down more than Corolla sales.

Thanks for the chart RX300-BV. The Genesis could also be affecting Avalon sales, and cars in that near-luxury segment. Some Buick numbers would help. If you go back further before the Genesis came out, you will see GS sales were suffering as well. A good point as well, that we don't have solid conquest numbers on the Genesis, which makes the GS comparison even more silly. Hyundai has only vaguely mentioned conquest sales for the Genesis, and they were boasting more about BMW and Benz conquests.

Advertisement is not a big factor in this market. The germans dont advertise and yet they sell car's like hot cake's. I keep seeing the new IS comercial's on tv all the time but nothing regarding the C or the 3 if anything it's only comercial featuring a german car was for Audi with its A4, that I saw during the launch of the the A4 during the Beijing Olympics.

Hate to sound like a broken record in my defense of the GS but it my have never reached BMW/Mercedes level of sales in this segment (but then again, no one has) but until recently it has been 3rd best in the class which is highly commendable. If slowed production is a factor in the decreased sales than that is just a shame as Lexus had a decent contender that could have easily kept up with what Cadillac, Infiniti & Lincoln had to offer even if it was older.

I also still do not understand all the comments on its sales decline bc again, like the RL, it is not going to randomly reverse itself so the monthly comments get old/unnecessary: we know that they suck & is it is probably going to stay that way until the redesign which hopefully happens in 2011 but I am not holding my breath. I do believe that with a little more effort on Lexus's part, the slide would not have been as severe ...

Just the opposite here...

I see the 3-series commercial all the time (the one with the 3er drove away from the pack) but nothing for the IS and G.

You are right, advertisement is not the big factor in this market... INCENTIVE is. I want to know what was the incentive for BMW in May compare to Lexus.

Default TurnAround

Toyota, which reported a 39.5 percent drop in May sales when compared to the same month last year, said that it will be ramping up production of six of its best-selling models over the next three months.

“We see a turnaround coming,” Bob Carter, general manager of Toyota Division, said during a sales call Tuesday.

With nearly a 40 percent drop in sales, what turnaround is Carter talking about? Carter told Automotive News that May sales were up 25 percent when compared to April.

“There was an improvement on the retail side of the business for the entire industry,” he said.

Carter said that North American production will increase by 65,000 units as Toyota increases output of the Camry, Corolla, Sienna, RAV4, Tacoma and Tundra models. All six models posted a sales gain in May over April with the Corolla up 27.2 percent and the Camry up 23.7 percent.

“We may be witnessing a slight rebound in the industry,” Carter said.

Red face 13%

Consumers trickled back into auto showrooms in May for one of the year's busiest months for deals, helping reverse the long slump that's wrecked Detroit and rattled Tokyo.

US sales of cars and light trucks jumped 13 percent from the prior month, suggesting a bottom could be forming. The auto industry isn't out of the woods by any means, analysts say.

Sales are down about 34 percent from a year earlier for all manufacturers, despite May's uptick.

Auto executives said buyers may have become "desensitized" to news of the bankruptcy filings of Chrysler and General Motors, and headed to showrooms in search of bargains.

Auto makers handed out near-record incentives to customers to do deals in May, averaging $3,766 per buyer of US makes, said Edmunds.com, which tracks the data.

Japanese makers gave the smallest, averaging $1,907, while European makers gave the highest at an average $3,823.

Chrysler handed out the biggest perk of any single carmaker, or $4,159 per vehicle, but it failed to halt the dismal May in which sales plunged 47 percent from April.

Ford, meanwhile, moved ahead of the pack for its biggest market gain in three years.

Ford said May sales jumped 20 percent for its best month "in quite some time" and its highest monthly volume since July last year.

From a year ago, however, Ford sales fell 24 percent.

GM -- still the largest US automaker -- said sales fell 30 percent from a year earlier, but jumped 11 percent from April to make May GM's best month in a year.

Toyota's US sales fell 40 percent from last year but climbed 21 percent from April. Honda's yearly volume fell 41 percent and Nissan dropped 33 percent.

You have to base the incentives per each vehicle though. Using Mercedes as an example, you easily get a higher average incentive offering when your product line includes several high end cars where a $10K-15k discount (% of MSRP) equals a $1500 discount on an entry level sedan.

This makes sense, and is supported by the huge amount of Prius orders Toyota has received in Japan.

that's some leap from japanese prius orders to an up turn in the whole toyota market in the u.s.

excess inventory is going to continue to get blown out in the u.s. hurting overall sales.

I think Toyota is looking at the overall market, not just the US market. I'm also guessing Prius orders will shoot up here in North America as well.

With over 100,000 Prius orders in Japan and counting, Toyota's overall global sales will see a lift. Over 100K is already more Priuses than Toyota planned to sell for the entire year in Japan.
