May 2009 Vehicles Sales
Whether you, anyone else, or Hyundai likes it or not, Genesis is in the entry-level segment (at best). You can argue just as much that Genesis is not even in the true luxury segment, but the near-luxury segment.
GS sales were suffering way before the Genesis came out.
I'd bet you anything that Genesis sales are NOT a direct hit to Lexus. I bet you Genesis sales are more of a direct hit to Buick, Infiniti, Volvo, Acura, and Lincoln. Before you bring up Lincoln sales figures, Lincoln is attracting a lot of new customers, a lot of people are downgrading from other brands to Lincoln, which would offset the impact the Genesis would have on the brand.
Here's the mid-sized luxury numbers (including Genesis numbers for analysis) since the MKS and Genesis went on sale last summer. Draw your own conclusions.

Thanks for the chart RX300-BV. The Genesis could also be affecting Avalon sales, and cars in that near-luxury segment. Some Buick numbers would help. If you go back further before the Genesis came out, you will see GS sales were suffering as well. A good point as well, that we don't have solid conquest numbers on the Genesis, which makes the GS comparison even more silly. Hyundai has only vaguely mentioned conquest sales for the Genesis, and they were boasting more about BMW and Benz conquests.
I also still do not understand all the comments on its sales decline bc again, like the RL, it is not going to randomly reverse itself so the monthly comments get old/unnecessary: we know that they suck & is it is probably going to stay that way until the redesign which hopefully happens in 2011 but I am not holding my breath. I do believe that with a little more effort on Lexus's part, the slide would not have been as severe ...
I see the 3-series commercial all the time (the one with the 3er drove away from the pack) but nothing for the IS and G.
You are right, advertisement is not the big factor in this market... INCENTIVE is. I want to know what was the incentive for BMW in May compare to Lexus.
“We see a turnaround coming,” Bob Carter, general manager of Toyota Division, said during a sales call Tuesday.
With nearly a 40 percent drop in sales, what turnaround is Carter talking about? Carter told Automotive News that May sales were up 25 percent when compared to April.
“There was an improvement on the retail side of the business for the entire industry,” he said.
Carter said that North American production will increase by 65,000 units as Toyota increases output of the Camry, Corolla, Sienna, RAV4, Tacoma and Tundra models. All six models posted a sales gain in May over April with the Corolla up 27.2 percent and the Camry up 23.7 percent.
“We may be witnessing a slight rebound in the industry,” Carter said.

US sales of cars and light trucks jumped 13 percent from the prior month, suggesting a bottom could be forming. The auto industry isn't out of the woods by any means, analysts say.
Sales are down about 34 percent from a year earlier for all manufacturers, despite May's uptick.
Auto executives said buyers may have become "desensitized" to news of the bankruptcy filings of Chrysler and General Motors, and headed to showrooms in search of bargains.
Auto makers handed out near-record incentives to customers to do deals in May, averaging $3,766 per buyer of US makes, said Edmunds.com, which tracks the data.
Japanese makers gave the smallest, averaging $1,907, while European makers gave the highest at an average $3,823.
Chrysler handed out the biggest perk of any single carmaker, or $4,159 per vehicle, but it failed to halt the dismal May in which sales plunged 47 percent from April.
Ford, meanwhile, moved ahead of the pack for its biggest market gain in three years.
Ford said May sales jumped 20 percent for its best month "in quite some time" and its highest monthly volume since July last year.
From a year ago, however, Ford sales fell 24 percent.
GM -- still the largest US automaker -- said sales fell 30 percent from a year earlier, but jumped 11 percent from April to make May GM's best month in a year.
Toyota's US sales fell 40 percent from last year but climbed 21 percent from April. Honda's yearly volume fell 41 percent and Nissan dropped 33 percent.

excess inventory is going to continue to get blown out in the u.s. hurting overall sales.
With over 100,000 Prius orders in Japan and counting, Toyota's overall global sales will see a lift. Over 100K is already more Priuses than Toyota planned to sell for the entire year in Japan.
