Post Nissan Skyline Crossover unveiled

Re-badging has stereotypically been the domain of U.S. carmakers, especially when crossing national borders, but Nissan/Infiniti are engaging in a bit of their own shell game with the Infiniti EX. Sending the vehicle to Japan as the Skyline Crossover, the car receives almost nothing in the way of updates or modifications save a Nissan badge.

Packaging the vehicle as a Skyline Crossover is almost a slap in the face to fans that had hoped for an Infiniti version of the GT-R, rumors concerning which were recently laid to rest. It does make sense, however, given that the G37, with which the EX shares much of its styling and underpinnings, is called the Skyline in Japan.

When the re-branded EX rolls into Japanese dealerships on April 18, it will be sporting the same 3.7L VQ37HR engine found in other-market Nissan and Infiniti vehicles including the G37, 370Z and especially the European-market EX37, which is its virtual doppelganger. It will also get the standard 7-speed automatic transmission with manual shift capability.

Expect emissions to be tweaked to suit Japanese requirements, and exhaust noise may be reduced slightly, but otherwise the vehicle should remain the same. Pricing for the Skyline Crossover hasn't yet been announced, but for those with Japanese language skills, the company has launched a mini-site dedicated to the re-badge.

It is a skyline crossover. In japan the G35 is the skyline and the GTR is the GTR now. There is no more skyline GTR like back in the day

seems a little shady and desperate to me. They are milking the famous skyline name. I was a previous Nissan/ Infiniti freak. I have lots of knowledge of these cars. I am still learning the Lexus/toyota line

out of all the names they had, they decided to pollute the "skyline". Tell me who were they trying to attract by calling that THING a skyline?

I don't see why you guys are making all this fuss over the name.

this is the Skyline:

this is the Skyline Crossover:

Their size and styling similarities (not to mention they use the same engine) all justify the name to me.

Skyline ≠ GT-R

I don't see anything wrong with this car. I actually like it. The Skyline, or G37 platform is a great car. This small cross over cute ute or whatever you call it will probably be just as good. I'd take this over an Acura MDX, BMW X3, Rav4 V6. CRV and such any day.

I was only making a joke when I mentioned April Fools Day and I fully understand what a Skyline is/was and how it is no longer associated with the GT-R. I also understand that it is a EX35/37 here, but IMO I just think it's too bad what the "Skyline" name has become or is becoming. I wonder how well this will be received in Japan...?

I guess I don't understand why they couldn't just name it the Nissan Useless or Nissan Diago or something instead of a Skyline?

They went though all the trouble of trying to convince people its not just a raised G35/37 and then the go to Japan and name it the same thing as the sedan/coupe the Skyline? As some have stated that name is ICONIC in Japan and even somewhat around the world. The first thing I would do if I ever got a G35/37 is switch the badges and call it what it really is, a Nissan Skyline. The name= drool.......

Why? Why not another name since they are trying to tell us its a different vehicle?

I thought they were trying to seperate more? This is not seperation at all this is continued rebadging.

As I predicted its failed from day one and when you read things like this, you have to scratch your head at who makes these decisions. Just like the vehicle die and be another discontinued model.

Way to slap a bucket of fail on the revered Skyline name.

Pretty much what I was feeling. It'll be hard for the "Skyline" name to command the same respect it once had after this. I'm also not so sure how synonymously this name could be used in marketed as a "sports" car anymore. I think they should just call this the "FAIL37," "POS37," "LOL37," "FTL37," etc...
