Just got finished up on saturday taking my Alternative A6 A8 and L1 classes... pass it wid 80% and better.. im super happy.. with the economy being so screwed, i decided i needed a second job to support my habits of mods i need done to my 2Gs.. Sent a app to the state and hopefully theyll get back to me soon so i can take the state exam... cant wait
whos a smog tech here...? just wondering, might need some tips on the real exam...
im a smog tech and questions on the state exam could be a little tricky.the first one i took i missed it by 2 question but i passed it on my second try.the trick is try to remember all the questions on the exam while youre doing it then go home and try to find answers to hose questions.most of the questions are the same but they do have 5 different exam.but if you want to passs it your first try, good luck with that and study hard.the guy that works there said 90% failed the exam on first try, most of them missed half of the exam questions.just be sure you have a good understanding.
I'm wondering that myself. If we ever get smog testing in our state, perhaps being a smog tech might be a good 2nd job, or maybe even primary job if it pays that good

if you own the shop its alright. the shop I work at was one of the first smog shop in the area, now theres like 10 smog shops within 1 mile. and theres 2 types of smog shops, test only and test and repair. test and repair you make more money than test only...
that was what I was thinking... there is a lot more money to be made in repairing emissions related items than simply testing them... in Nevada, our smog techs made about $10 of the $19.95 that the state said we had to charge... Not a bad chunk of change for 3-5 minutes worth of work, but not necessarily a gold mine either...
When I lived in Mexico City, having an emissions testing station was like owning a McDonalds at just the right intersection. The owner of my 1/4 mile track owned two such stations and made quite a bit of money. You can imagine with a metropolitan area that is the second largest in the world, something like 25 million people, and the testing stations were limited in number. As I recall for newer cars, the fee was like $25 USD or so and $40 or more for older cars, and even higher to test commercial vehicles. In the metropolitan area, you had to test TWICE a year (every 6 months) by law for locally plated vehicles, so you can see how the money would just flow in.

I am unsure of it's cost and pay in California...
Cali usually takes 8.25 for the certificate and the shop charges watever price they want
