Default Whatever Happened to "Sporty Coupes"?

I remember back in the early 90's when all my buddies and I were looking for new cars after college, we had a wealth of affordable, fun-to-drive 2-doors to consider. Off the top of my head I can remember:

- Toyota Celica
- Toyota MR2
- Toyota Supra
- Honda Civic Si
- Honda Prelude
- Acura Integra
- Nissan NX
- Nissan 240SX
- Mitsubishi Eclipse
- Mitsubishi 3000GT
- Dodge Stealth
- Eagle Talon
- Plymouth Laser
- Chevy Camaro
- Pontiac Firebird
- Ford Mustang
- Ford Probe
- Saturn SC
- Mazda RX-7

If I was in the same market today, I can think of:
- Scion tC
- Honda Civic Si
- Infiniti G37
- Mazda 3
- Hyundai Tiburon

Why is there not more demand for small, fun cars? It would seem like a well-built, decent-performing, affordable coupe would sell very well in today's economy and uncertain gas price world. What am I missing?

RX-8? Cobalt SS? Mustang? Altima? 1-series? Camaro? Challenger?

You have a lot of re-badged duplicates on your list... so the disparity is not as big as it seems.

i dont think these are bad times...

nissan 370z
nissan GT-R
nissan sentra se-r
honda s2000 (about to end production though)
honda civic si
mitsu evo
mitsu lancer ralliart
subaru wrx & sti
subaru legacy
hyundai genc
mazda rx8
mazda mx5

that disregards the domestics... cobalt ss, mustang, camaro, challenger, g8, etc
also as primecut pointed out there are duplicates on the list w/respect to the eclipses

the biggest issue i see is toyota got out of the game. but there are great offerings elsewhere anyway

Car makers have experienced up then down sales historically for 2 door sporty coupes, so I think they are reluctant to invest a lot in this class of car. Typically these sporty coupes have high sales for a short period of time, but lose their popularity quickly (flavor of the month sales trends).

Yes, I have one but it's a true sports car/roadster (not a sporty couple).

The best examples of sporty coupes (2doors only) are Preludes, Eclipses, Celicas, etc. Often they are mid-priced 2+2 cars.

The Mitsu Eclipse is still being produced along with the Honda Civic and a few others on your list.. It is Toyota that truly needs to step it up in the "affordable" coupe department.

Well, the 2009 Ford Mustang and Dodge Challenger are still in the "affordable" class, The new Chevy Camaro will be out in another month or so (but with the SS model now questionable), and the Mazda Miata can be turned into a 2-seater "coupe" with an attachable hardtop. If you can spend some more, there is the Audi A5, Volvo C30 (actually more of a coupe/hatchback), BMW 1-series coupes, Nissan Altima coupe, and, as the poster above pointed out, the Mitsubishi Eclipse.

Boxsters cost too much new, Russ (loaded, they can run near 60K), That's probably out of the price range he's looking for. Besides, most Boxsters are produced as convertibles, not coupes.....the Cayman, in general, fills the coupe role.
