Subaru announces automatic STI
Let's face it, most Americans buy automatics so they can:
a. talk/text on the phone
b. apply make-up (women and some men?)
c. read the paper/do crossword puzzles
d. get dressed
e. eat/drink
Back on topic.
While STis/WRXs might be mostly stick shifts, the Legacy and Foresters are probably mostly automatics. A female neighbor was looking at a Forester was disappointed to find out that it only came in auto. The couple already have a 2005 WRX wagon in manual. They wanted the Forester because they need the room for kids things.

I think DSGs are cool, but BMWs don't do anything that a MT doesnt do. It's just a faster automatic. Jeremy Clarkson pointed out the the tranny by Aston Martin you can't even downshift when you want to. Call me old fashioned, but I like having to use as bit of skill and control when shifting.
I interpreted it as the entire lineup becoming automatic as it stands the GSR (base EVO) still comes in 5speed trim. I still consider the DSG an automatic to some extent because well it can automatically shift for you. I mean sure you can throw it in manual mode and go nuts with "manually" shifting the gears (you're still not really shifting the gears, you click something and the electronics take care of the rest to send a message to the gear box to shift). I really hope that the DSG becomes more mainstream and replaces the auto gearboxes of today. I can easily see people who already pay a 1-2k premium over a manual over a conventional automatic to shell out a little more for a DSG if there was only the choice of manual or DSG. And if it does become mainstream prices will drop on DSG transmissions. The only problem I have with many DSG units is that they're completely sealed. Meaning if something fails inside, good luck you have to buy a WHOLE new unit.
