Default Hyundai debuts 460hp SC V8 prototype engine

The 4.6 liter Tau V8 offered in the Hyundai Genesis Sedan normally cranks out 380 HP, but this prototype engine gets a screw-type roots supercharger with a novel clutched pulley, a water-to-air intercooler, and cylinder deactivation. This results in 460 HP and 435 lb-ft of torque while returning 8% better fuel economy.

The flow path is rather unique as well, with the supercharger intake at the rear, charged air going down into the intercooler and then back up into a split plenum which feeds the throttle at the rear of the engine. There aren't any formal plans to introduce this engine to any product at the moment, but it exists, which means there's a gleam in someone's eye. Perhaps sooner or later we'll get to run the Hyundai Genesis R-Spec Sedan versus the Chrysler 300C SRT8.

"... he returns with an impressive 4.9-second 0-60 time with the car running a conservative 11 pounds of boost. Tests with earlier prototypes and more road returned a quarter-mile time of 13.58 seconds at 108 mph. Still, the Hyundai guys aren't satisfied. "Needs summer tires," Dan Bedore tells me. "Plus, we can't push the car hard. Breaking it at this point would be a real bummer."

Hyundai is really out for blood now. Genesis, Genesis coupe, Tau V8, turbo 4cyl, and now this blown V8. Who knows what is next at this rate?

If Lexus, BMW, Mercedes or any of the other companies wrote off the Genesis at first, I have to believe they are really watching now. Hyundai is simply out to prove than they can do anything.

I'll give it to it since it does offer better gas mileage, but the HP war is over.

The new face of the automotive world...

Hyundai

But don't you think they arrived a little late to be putting out supercharged vehicles?

Why not? This brings some excitement back to automotive scene. Generally HP sells. Any car with 400+ hp puts it in a supercar territory. Cylinder deactivation with supercharger sounds good. At least they had fuel efficiency in mind.
