So far, as I see it...the IS sedan...beautiful, the IS convertible...hmm...and the SC, a shape that lets you forget the hardtop elements. The 3-series convertible suffers vs. the coupe IMO because of the roof elements, the IS convertible seems to have that too, if not more. It also seems that the trunk area also makes concessions to the storage space requirements in its shape, similar to the SC 430 in part.

bmw made a flat rear deck. probably had to sacrifice trunk space, but who cares.
the IS design was pretty bland to begin with. so even with these photoshop edits, it still looks less attractive than a 3 series:

That's an interesting chop. The rear deck being flat like that and the different color helps make it look more proportioned. The 3-series hardtop convertible does look somewhat like the coupe, but the coupe is much better looking. As for the IS, we apparently will not see a regular coupe anytime soon, but what makes the IS sedan side profile look good IMO is the side window profile, fastback shape...there is no fastback with a hardtop convertible, and the side windows have a more generic shape.

I'll reserve final judgment until I see one in person, but I like what I see.
It’s pretty much what the 'spy photos' etc have been hinting too. I think it will sell OK.

Replacing the SC430

Lexus unveils IS 250C hard top convertible
Lexus announced earlier this year that a new IS convertible was in the works, and the Japanese automaker gave up the goods on Thursday at the Paris Motor Show. Dubbed the IS 250C, the new convertible will go head-to-head with BMW’s drop top 3-series and will eventually replace the company’s SC430.
Like the outgoing Lexus SC 430, the IS 250C will use a retractable hard top — a three piece aluminum unit in this case — rather than a conventional soft top. The IS 250 C’s solid roof should make it a more attractive option for those residing in cold weather states, and will also give the IS equal footing with BMW’s retractable hard top 3-series offerings.
The convertible IS features revised front and rear fascia, with overhangs slightly longer than its four-door counterparts. Inside, the IS 250C coddles with all the creature comforts Lexus buyers have come to expect, including enough room in the trunk — roof down — to hold a couple of golf bags.
Although Lexus unveiled the IS 250C at the Paris show, no word on when or if Lexus plans to unveil the IS 350C. Earlier reports suggested that both models would be available in the U.S. in 2009, so it’s possible that Lexus is saving the IS 350 C for a later show, such as November’s LA Auto Show.
Fans of open air motoring and V8 power will have to look elsewhere – Lexus doesn’t plan to produce a convertible version of the hotter IS-F.

These shots actually look better to me than the ones that surfaced last night, mostly because they're higher quality and we can make out more details.
From the ones I saw before you couldn't see that character line that runs up the side of the car which thankfully makes it look less slab sided and a bit more shapely. You can see the detail and shapes best in this picture I think:
I think it looks awkward to only have the tops of the dash and doors a different color when everything behind the front seats is all one color. They should have done something to break up the monotony in the back seat because from these pictures it looks like the front seats and back seats are from two different cars.
Lastly, this color combination is not particularly attractive...red on ecru? Looks very feminine. Those wheels are also a deal breaker IMO. They look too much like the Solara wheels.
So...let me see it in real life, in a different color (Maybe Black or Grey) and with different rims and I think the car would look totally different than it does here.
Didn't have time to change the rims, but I think this already looks somewhat better than the original pics. Still prefer the 3 or G.

Don't care, it's a two-seater, the SC's rear seat is an excellent luggage rack that can hold A LOT of groceries and other stuff when required, it has been very useful to me.
I have zero desire to trade my 6-year old SC430(with a little less than 30,000 miles) for this new IS coupe ...
