GX470...a pleasant suprise
The thing won 4x4 truck of the year so I am sure it was pushed to the extreme...........
The grab handles are soft, and since leather on them is conditioned, is just a great feeling. It is fixed and i am glad because it just feels much more solid. A pillars are padded and the headlined is most likely the same as your 1997 es300, because it is the same as our 2001 es300
When we outgrew our 2000 RX, my wife REALLY wanted to stay with Lexus. Unfortunately the GX has some design issues including a terrible 3rd row and a terrible implementation of the hatch (try opening that up with someone parked up close to you). She ruled it out without even driving it.
I personally think it is an attractive vehicle, but the MDX is a better vehicle for the average family needing an occasional 3rd row.

I had a LX470, IMO LX is the best SUV Lexus ever made.
I drove a GX470 once, and when I was making a turn in it, it just scared me! My bigger LX had more control over it.
And I agree GX is too narrow.
I would choose LX over it anyday.
Again, I am comparing LX VS. GX. GX is still a very nice SUV.

Sure.....in normal, sedate, day-to-day driving, it's fine, but my point was that its high center of gravity and tall, narrrow stance doesn't bode well for spirited cornering. It is not a Miata or an S2000, and can't be driven like one without consequences.
The guys that publish 4X4 and off-roading magazines know the limits of this type of vehicle, and don't try to drive them like sports cars.

As for those bishing about handling, It handles just fine and I'd rather people drive it slower and like they are sane instead of ******** who think their SUV handles like a car b/c Motor Trend says so.
I regret the GX is also my least favorable Lexus. From outside, it is an out-of-proportion 4 Runner with the additional attic to make up vertical space that 4 Runner lacks. The wheel design is among the ugliest ones I haven’t seen in a while. I like the interior though except that dated 4-wheel-drive transfer lever.
It isn't just a case of what Motor Trend says (and, IMO, they are not one of the better auto magazines). The concept of center-of-gravity and tipsiness is basic science and physics at its simplest level.....if I remember correctly, I learned it in the fourth or fifth grade. One simple glance at the GX, even without looking at the printed specs, dimensions, shows how narrow it is in relation to its height. That's fine for casual, sedate driving, but you don't necessarily have to be doing high-speed or "insane" cornering to get in trouble. If you simply have to make a sudden enough swerve, even at moderate speeds, to avoid a child, an animal, or another vehicle, it could mean trouble. The Suzuki Samurai, Jeep CJ-5, older Ford Broncos, and some other small SUV's were notorious for sudden roll-overs. The GX is not as small or light (or as unstable) as they were, but still narrow in relation to its height.
^^ The old range rover and montero where also know for this correct? And i guess this thread just goes to show everyone has their own tastes. Personally i like it because i wouldn't want to drive fast in an suv any way you put it, i would have a porsche for that haha
