I would recommend the 05-07 G35's over the 03-04 if you can dish out the extra money. They have needed improvements.
The only real issue that exists with the 05-07 6MT is oil consumption. Chances are you will be fine, but monitor the comsumption of your engine to make sure you don't have that infamous issue. (If it did, warranty would cover it).
is there an extreme $ difference between the 04 vs 05-07s? i would probably be in the market only for CPO. thanks a bunch for your advice

i would moderately 'mod' it. no crazy TT or SC. i would like to drive it without having to worry if i get pulled over and the CHP decides to pop my hood.

absolutely YES. i know the porsche will beat a G35, however, (stock vs stock) if the G35 can stay within about a car to car and a half length with the 996, then i'd be totally satisfied; of course off the line and rolling say 40mph run. again, i'm just surveying and weighing all my options

I've owned both... although my 2IS was an IS_250 and my G35 was a sedan.
Unless you need the 6MT buy the IS350. The G35 is louder and less refined than the IS. The day I drove my G35 home, I was annoyed by the amount of road noise and how much harsh it rode compared to my IS. My other complaints were the hideous interior of the G35. Compared to the IS, the G interior is "dated" and the exhaust was waaaaaay too loud for a stock sport sedan.
My G35 was an 03 sedan, but I hear the newer 07-08 Sedans are much quicker on par with the IS350 and they are supposed to be quieter.

thanks for your comments. i would only consider a 6MT. and since i'm considering a sports car, i would expect a bit more noise (also considering i'd be adding exhaust and intake as well).
No one has mentioned the E46 BMW M3. 333hp stock, 6mt or smg, many mods for it, runs neck and neck with a porsche. As for IS350 vs G35 coupe, I would go for the G35. Choose carefully, some come with big brembo brakes and some do not.

I agree with just about everything you said, except for the fact that the new G sedans are on-par as far as quickness. They are still about a half second slower in the quarter mile than the IS350.
Hmm....I think this is a very hard choice I personally will probably taken the G35.....I have been driving my sister's and that car is very very quick.
