Interesting thread. 
For me it is a toss-up between any Toyota Landcruiser (preferably with an economical diesel engine as I require range in such an environment), the Mercedes G class / Unimog and the Land Rover Defender. All three have a reputation for capability, reliability, toughness and surviving.
