Default Time to pick up a new M5?

Ok guys/gals here is your chance to give me some insight into what might be my next car.

Background (for those of you who don't know). I have a custom ordered 2006 550 that I simply love. Alas, I've always dreamed of owning an M car (since 1995 when I could not swing it and picked up a 325i). Right now BMW has .9% financing for 60 months or some pretty sweet lease deals.

Since most BMW dealers put their inventory up on the web, I've been able to find a car that just about matches my wish list (only issue is that it is black and I prefer blue). Some dealers are offering up to $10K off sticker and one I know of is almost $15K off sticker. I negotiated down to invoice on this car (about $8K under sticker) and got BMWFS to give me the preferred rate. All set to possibly lease the car (which is not local to me).

Then my sales guy drops the bomb. He just found out that the hood and roof had to be re-painted due to acid rain. He and I are both questioning this and he is supposed to get more detail tomorrow.

So... give your 2 cents to this mess by answering the poll. Remember, I would be leasing this car for three years.

So you can get a new M5 for invoice? Has anyone ever seen a deal like that posted before on an M5? If you can live with the fuel mileage, and in this instance I don't believe anyone would look at an M5 if they couldn't afford to feed it, there doesn't seem to be much of a question.

Nothing like a slow economy and expensive gas to make some bargains. Great time to be shopping unless you are trying to get that very special Prius.

As for the poll, I really don't know.

If the M5 is within your budget, get it. It is not economical or financially prudent, but dream cars are not supposed to be. You only live once, I say go for the M5

Ordinarily, as you know, I tend to be very conservative in my auto-buying/leasing recommendations, usually recommending the lower-line car as the more sensible one in the long run. This time, though, I'm going to make an exception.....even though I reviewed a 550i at your request some time ago. The 550 is a superb sports sedan, but if you can lease an M5 for that good a rate....or buy one at invoice.....I'd say go for it. This time, it may actually make more sense to get the M5.....especially if you lease it. Why? Simple. If gas prices stay up, an M5's residual value, in 2 or 3 years, will be in the tank. But a good lease deal, right now, would put you way ahead of the car's depreciation curve.....you would be paying lease rates based on lower (and possibly much lower) depreciation than the car is likely to actually experience. True, if the car is repainted because of acid rain damage, it would lower its residual value even more, and lead to even higher depreciation, but that's not your problem as the leasee....you will, in effect, come out even better on your lease.

So, (this time only), I say enjoy your new M5.

With that V10 and its premium gas, though, be ready for the REAL expenses..........

Dude, if you get a SMOKING deal, do it. Do it while gas is cheap
M5, V-10, thats a rare beast and with the rates/rebates, why NOT!!!
I've had my car repainted by the dealer before and it was just like new.

Every day - even in nice Chicago winters... Thus my heated steering wheel requirement

I am a huge fan of the M as well. My friend has a covertible M^ and he hates the gas mileage. Not that you buy those cars for economy, but we still dont want to drop 400 dollars a month on gas. In 2 yrs it will be 550-600 dollars amonth for gas on that beast. Im not saying dont do it, just keep it in mind. I would go for it and do a short lease

I say you should make the dealer do better if your buddy says it was substanial, if not, take the deal and run with it!!! All this talk about gas, if it gets that bad, you will use the M5 on weekends and buy a used Prius.

The deal sounds great and dreams only come true if you make them.

I'm fortunate that I don't have to drive very far. My 550 is 27 months old and has 16,900 miles on it. So I'm not terribly worried about the gas.

Am I the only one here that spends $20 daily on gas? I wish I would do 400/month. Anyways, I say get the M5. If the dealer is painting, whats the problem. No problem in color match since the car hasn't seen sun. I wish onedya I could afford the M5 but I have a long way to go. Its so damn sexy. Guys, if he is thinking about getting an expensive M5, I really think he isnt worried about gas. Why would anyone buy an 83,000 car while gas if gas was an issue?

Cars can almost never gauge a person's wealth (with exceptions of like cars on the very top like Enzos and Bugatti's)... I guess maybe that is not an issue in TX but in California its funny when a person drive a $100k-$200k car and lives in a bad area or crappy house... and spending large % of their income to only lease the car lol.... (and this is pretty common in cali)...

Go for it! It sounds like a great deal that would most likely never have been possible just a year or two ago. Life is short. If the cost of gas doesn't matter to you, then lease that car!! Of course you should post up some pics asap when you get it!
