Get another car. I did the two same car thing a while back and while I enjoyed both of them (One for me and one was my wifes. Both modified Acura Legend Coupes) it just wasn't the same. I wish during that time I had bought a different car to play with. Basically for me it became the same old thing day in and out. I am a die hard Legend fan and I never got tired of the car itself, but I got tired of experiencing the same thing. If anything, get a different Lexus, or a different brand all together.
You know I was looking at the NEW Honda Fit, and it looks pretty cool with the panaramic roof top.
Be careful of going too low down the car chain unless you purely plan on using it for a daily beater and don't give a rat's behind what happens to it. My friend went from a 2002 Infiniti F50 Q45 with a full Junction Produce kit, Air Runner, 20" rims and the works, to a Honda Fit as he thought it would be a better daily driver with better gas mileage and such. As it turned out, gas mileage wasn't as good as he wanted it to be, and he got bored of driving the Fit. Last I heard he wanted to sell the Fit and possibly buy a Lexus LS.
Now, if you are just using as a daily beater, get the cheapest thing you can. I generally buy used Camry's and Accord for that very thing myself. I don't to much to them at all. It the car gets dented or stolen, I really don't care
For 20K as a daily driver, if you want something fairly sporty and with good mileage, check out the Scion tC and the 4-cylinder Hyundai Tiburon. Both have sporty coupe looks, are well-built, and will not break your budget.....in fact, with a stick, you can get both for under 20K, although there is no bargaining on new Scions....by company policy, they sell at full list. But, even automatic versions will be only about $1000 more. And, in each case, you will have a brand-new car, not used.

Yes, nice cars, DASH, but, except for the Mini and the Mazda3/Miata, they are a little thirsty for long-commute DD's. And you won't get them brand new for 20K or less, except base-model Mazda 3's.
I understand the whole try something different idea, since I want to get a used Boxster S or Vette sometime in the future but it depends on how much he really loves his GS ... If he LOVES driving his GS now, then I think he should get another one because he's going to be using his current one as a show car which means very limited to no driving on it ...
OP - if you don't mind not being able to ride in a Lex everyday then by all means test the waters
