Default 540 Is A Fire Risk!

http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=250344

Check the link above about this guy's 540 catching fire. Looks like it happened to a couple other guys too.
I'm posting this for a couple reasons:
-Warning to others with Commerce Insurance coverage
-Warning to others with a 540
-The op asked that readers spread the thread.
Plus, it's interesting news.

This is why I always said that insurance companies are a bunch of scum, and mandatory auto insurance just makes the matters worse.

the 540i also had a faulty transmission...

most e39 5-series vehicles also had a very bad radiator (it's plastic), and sometimes the coolant tank/pump would also fail.

not to mention a crappy sound system...

And the worst nav system ever made.

But boy is it fun to drive!

I love the way the car looks and drive. I've heard of cooling issues, which is why I didn't buy one when I was debating on the GS400 vs 540.

seriously? I thought you would never buy anything Germans.

what is the big deal? Fire & Water should cancel themselves out.

THe e38 740 also has cooling issue. Mainly because of the plastic radiator. They tend to go bad (crack) every 70-80k miles.

Well, thats true, and the fact that it's German is probably the biggest reason I didn't consider it too much. I'm just honestly having a difficult time finding anything worthy to replace my GS.

I'm probably going to keep the GS and get an SC430.

I didn't post this thread to bash bimmers....but I just remembered reading about overheating issues with the new 335 when it is pushed.
Still love bimmers but buying one just seems so unwise.

Well guys, just keep it nice, clean and cool about the topic. I know some of the BMW guys will jump in soon.
The BMW is a nice car and I hope they can figure out was wrong with it before it go all over the internet(may be too late). This is another bad thing about internet.
