Default 2009 VW Routan (official pics pg. 2)

Brenda Priddy and her quick lens caught the first photos of the rebadged Dodge Caravan that is the 2009 Volkswagen Routan Minivan. As you can tell from the photo, it does carry a lot from the current lineup of Chrysler minivans (though, with something else going on out front and in back). If you look at the back, you can see the taillights have a sort of curvature reminiscent of the current Passat/Jetta, unless that's an optical illusion. Exciting stuff. We can't wait to see it in full at the Chicago Auto Show.

I had heard about this venture between Chrysler and VW. I don't understand why they did it.

Why not bring back the VW Bus based on those concepts we saw a few years ago. That way, it would actually be a VW.

Oh, and that name. Can't VW come up with one decent name?

They will probably test it down here, too, since Mexico is the land of VW.

Most aren't necessarily bashing the vehicle itself but rather the fact that VW had to venture with Chrysler to bring a minivan to market. And many people just have a negativity about ALL minivans.

VW badged Chryslers. Wow, what's next?

I just tried to come up with a stranger joint venture/rebadging and I couldn't come up with anything.

So I went back to look at what happened with the VW Microbus concept that was originally planned for a comeback and it turns out that VW decided against it around 2005 due to US market conditions and a weakening dollar. The Mircrobus couldn't be built for under $35K and they realized that most Americans wouldn't go for a $40K minivan. It would've been another financial flop for VW.

It was actually planned that Chrysler would build the new Microbus (planned in 2005). It turns out that it's just a rebadged Caravan.

The concept from about 5-6 years ago....
