Update, the owner of this car from back then, has prostate cancer, he's my godfather, my dad, my buddy, taught me how to drive, showed me how to play chess, never did we miss a meal bc of him. Most of all he's my idol. If it wasm't for him i would have never came to the states, he means the world to me, so if you can find it in your hearts to squeeze out a prayer for uncle ROD, that would be awesome, god bless you.

I apologize if i put this in the wrong section, i just needed to get this out, have a good night and be well.

It's always nice to appreciate what we have, no matter where we came from.

For now, most of us have Lexus. I remember when I was a kid, my parents were able to fit themselves and 4 kids in a Tercel. I'm just happy that we did have a car in the first place when thinking of other people who can't afford one car at all.

It's healthy to sometimes take a step back and take a good look: we're pretty damn lucky to drive the cars we want, chat about it on-line with our expensive computers, and know that we're with good company at all times.

Dam, you guys are poor. Our first family car was a white 79 'vette(chevette):
I agree though. I'm grateful everyday for what we have today

+1

My family and I are very grateful and thankful for what we have. 10-15 years ago, we would've never imagined we would have what we have today.

I have to agree that its crazy nice to have the things I have today! My parents were coming out of welfare when they had me but youd think I was spoiled because of the things they have today. No complaints about life from me!

Of course it broke down regularly. It was a French-designed car.

That same vehicle was sold here in America as the Ford Festiva.

And you didn't burn up the engine, transmission, or brakes from overloading it?

(not to mention not having everyone belted up either)

That just shows you how well Toyotas were built then.

This really just shows how old I am...

So at the time, no airbags in those cars yet, and I don't know if there was a law against holding a child in your arms instead of a baby seat.

Dad and my older brother in front. My mom + baby bro, sis, and I in the back. If my youngest bro was a baby, then I would have been 4, my sister 8, and my older brother 10. Yeah, we fit.

I wish I had a picture of my first car......1979 Dodge Omni, with the Volkswagen engine. Thing ran for freaking ever! I had to let it go when the floorboard wanted me to drive it like Fred Flintstone.

You say it ran forever. Did you have the 4-speed stick? The automatics in those cars were pure junk. So were the bodies (though not quite so bad), which is why yours ended up with holes in it. So were the original engines, which is why I'm surprised yours ran so long. I had one of the original 1978's. The VW-designed engine always ran lean and hesitated (the Chrysler emisson-choked carb on it wouldn't give it any gas), it started using oil, even with regular oil changes, at around 20,000 miles, and the junk automatic seized up at 24,000. (Warranties back then were only 12/12 on the whole car).

The only thing that car was good for, IMO, was FWD snow traction in an age when few cars sold in America could say that.
