Thinking about B6 Passat Wagon: should I?
Hmmm...thinking about getting a 2008 Passat Wagon. Probably a 2.0T but have not ruled out the V6.
Does anyone own one? Any thoughts on ownership?
Does anyone express an opinion generally on it?
It's either that or I spend a little more and buy a 12mth old RX350. Not really too hyped about the RX because it lacks rear side airbags.

Matters,
I have not owned one, but I have spent ~30 days driving a rental Passat sedan, 6spd auto (probably 2006 (while my GS was in the shop). It had ~12K on the odometer.
My impressions are:
1) This car drives nicely (sporty) for a 2.0T FWD with lowly all-season tires.
2) There is enough power for normal and brisk driving from the 2.0T.
3) The car is reasonably roomy inside.
4) The interior is cheap, compared to earlier VWs (my 2000 GTI, for example).
5) Leatherette sucks - it is like sitting in a plastic bag when the sun is out. It may be mitigated by a different color choice (mine was black/black). Give me cloth or leather.
6) The interior has a bunch of squeaks and rattles - at 12K miles with stock suspension and lowly (soft sidewall) all-season tires.
7) Check engine light came on - don't know why. Was told by the rental agent to ignore it - she said VWs do that every now and then - this is not a good sign in my book.
8) I averaged ~22mpg during this month.
When I picked up my 2001 GS, I was astonished at how much better it felt - the steering is heavier, the stalks and control movement is more positive, the ride is better, etc. This is all subjective, I know.
Overall, would be OK driving this car, but I don't think I would own one, in light of my experience and VW's history of quality problems.
No comments on the alternative you mentioned, since it is apples-to-oranges.

Thanks, that's helpful. I am very concerned about the quality control of VW. That's why I am reluctant.
It's going to be a bit of gamble, a $55k out-the-door gamble over here. Not sure whether I am up for it.

Passat is nice vehicle, IMO. It sells very well outside of US tho.
It just got nothing stand out, really.
People thinking about buying it would opt. A6 instead, especially in Wagon form.
