Default Best $10,000 car?

Sporty and good looking are the only requirements.

My vote would go to one of the many kinds of e46 3 series

I assume used? You can probably get a somewhat higher mileage 98 LS400 for that much, and it's one hell of a car.

The LS400 is not at all a sporty car imo, although it can be tuned for such. A '98-'99 Lexus GS300/ 400 can be had for $9k-$10k w/ ~ 110k-125k miles which is about average for a 8-9 year old car. Its 1 of the best in reliabilty, is a sport-sedan and is very good looking to me.

You can't get the E46 M3 for 10k. Even the 3-series should run in a little over 10k. I'm sure you could find one in the 10k range but they'll be right in that area.

IMO. Buy a bike.

Yes it is absolutely one of the worst things that can happen to a car - causes an timebomb of electrical nightmares. Do not buy it.

You can't get an E46 for 10k at this point. More like $20-25k.

I would stretch a few grand and look at a new Mazda3 or Mitsu Lancer, those can be had around $13-15k base. Otherwise I'm sure a used Mazda3 would fall within $10k. Acura RSX can fall within it, if it's got enough miles. Then again, insurance costs an arm and a leg for that vehicle.

I really don't think its worth it. Thats kinda high milage for a BMW, your gonna have to start replacing things soon on it just for regualr maintinace.

My co-worker picked up a 2000 323ci 5-spd for $11,100 off of EBAY. Its KBB value is $16,300. G/L finding a decent 3 seres for $10,000.

i think BMWs are only good cars to own if you're absolutely sure about everything--how it was kept, the maintenance/repair record, how the previous owner drove it, etc. etc.

otherwise it's a hit-and-miss type of thing.

I was going to say... an E46 for $10K? And with water damage?
RUN, don't walk away from this! (Dave beat me to it).

$10K doesn't leave many options.... maybe a used MR2 Turbo, MR2 Spyder,
Miata, Protege?

If you don't mind spending $ on maintenance an E36 M3 would be fun.
My guess is that for $10K you'll only find mostly ragged-on cars...
