What do you mean... Why is the XJ220 failure in the 90's? I never thought they are the failure. They are the successor.
I still find the Jaguar XJ220 the top notch exotic car. It has the spirit... the design is astounding and inpiring. The performance is incredible, even now. 0-100 mph in just 7.9 sec. Top speed at near 220 mph. It also did quite well in the Nurburgring too. I go drool everytime I see that engine bay inside the rear windshield.
Its a great supercar too buy. Found one for about $300k CDN, which is still high but way worth it. Still cheaper too buy the XJ220 then a Enzo. For a car thats about a decade older than an Enzo, still can play with a million dollar supercar (too a certain extent)
Well also buyers were promised a V-12, instead got a TT V-6. Many owners took Jag to court over this, as they put deposits down thinking they were getting a V-12.
It was at one time the car with the highest top speed, I believe until the Mclaren came.
Unless Jaguar gets unloaded to a consortium like the one that just bought Aston, I don't see this happening. Jag is barely alive as it is... not being helped by the fact that parent Ford is holding on for dear life as well. These type cars aren't always very profitable for the huge amount of R&D/marketing dollars required to do a super car PROPERLY. It'd be a really bad financial move to do this one anytime soon. Jag needs to secure its future EXISTANCE first.
However, this is not to say I'd still love to see a new generation XJ.
