Default 2008 Mitsubishi Evolution X Prototype @ NAIAS

X is Roman for ten. But we'd like to think it denotes and X rating--for the meanest, rawest Evo ever made. This future rally rocket was first previewed by the Concept X from last year's Tokyo auto show, and now a closer version is being shown here at Detroit. When the car goes on sale around this time next year, power will continue to come from a 2.0-liter turbo four, but output will push past the current Subaru WRX STI's 300-hp rating and a new, aluminum block will be used. Because it would be a shame not to use the new Outlander SUV's lovely magnesium-alloy paddle shifters, an automated manual transmission will be offered alongside a traditional 5-speed manual box. Naturally, the Evo will be driven by all four wheels, via a new S-AWC (Super All-Wheel Control) system that Mitsubishi promises will rival Honda's SH-AWD in sophistication. The new system will feature active steering, active yaw control, and myriad electronic sensors. We hope S-AWC doesn't compromise the great steering possessed by Evos VIII and IX--after all, Mitsubishi promises this will be the "largest leap in overall capability between two generations of the Evolution."

They plan on releasing a "WRX alternative" priced Evo also. That will be the cats meow if the engine is stout. Since dropping the 4G63, it will be interesting to see what this new aluminum engine is capable of.

I remember seeing a photo of this at an auto show we had down here in December and really liking the design. I hope they correct those issues with the AWD/Turbos and the clutches.

although many people might think that EVO and some auto/sequential combo doesn't match, I think it will greatly boost Evo's sales.

I have just noticed one thing. Mitsu released a lot of Evo X pics but there are actually two cars:

ONE WITH PRODUCTION READY HEADLIGHTS (and smaller rims)

and one showcased at NAIAS with crazy concept headlights

I really hope those orange lights along the bottom of the dash make it to production. What an awesome touch.

Who thought Mitsu was down for the count? The new Outlander is supposed to be fantastic, and it looks like the regular lancer will be right up there with the Mazda3.

Great looking car. Looks a little less cartoonish compared to the current version.

Looks mean.....nice. That big front grille is going to catch lots of trash.
This is still going to be the only mitsubishi that sells
