Welcome to CL!!! I agree, the Lexus navigation sets the standard.

IMO they should continue to always have touchscreen, if they want to add a **** that could be a secondary option.

idrive is a POS
when i was in BMW's dealership
the sales man had to spend 10 minutes navigating through things just to get it to show me what he wanted to show me
the idrive confused the heck out of the salesman too, i feel bad for him trying to sell a product that i know he honestly does not like

lol

Cool 4 ways to control...

They can do both!

The new G35 has 4 different ways to control the Navigation System:

1. Touch-Screen Interface
2. Voice Recognition
3. HMI Controller
4. Steering Wheel Buttons

If Infiniti can do it, I’m sure Lexus can do it as well.

Volvo’s Navigation System comes with an optional remote control, so anyone in the car can use it. It is a neat idea IMO. I am surprised that no other car maker has thought of this.

I think a merger will occur. Clearly there is an advantage to touch screen especially when entering textual data. The iDrive type controller is better when you need to scroll through music, etc. Also having programmable buttons to suit your taste will be nice too. My steering wheel on the 6 has a couple custom buttons you can program. The new iDrive system in the X5 and 335 vert will have 8 programmable buttons. The manufacturers continue to pile on the options and as a result some type of central computer is required due to limited dash space. I think BMW and Lexus can learn from each other and push the interface designs to appease everyone.
