A Goodyear man clocked at a record 147 mph by speed cameras on Scottsdale's stretch of Loop 101 will spend seven days in jail and take aggressive-driving classes as part of a plea deal reached with city prosecutors.
Lawrence Pargo, 27, originally pleaded not guilty to misdemeanor charges of endangerment, reckless driving and excessive speed, and he could have spent six months in jail.
But when Scottsdale police arrested him May 26, he described his actions as "the stupidest of all time" and praised the cameras for catching him.
Under the deal, he pleaded guilty to reckless driving, endangerment and criminal speed, and will pay a $1,239 fine. He also faces a year of probation and 30 days in jail.
But Caron Close, Scottsdale city prosecutor, said 23 days will be suspended if Pargo attends an aggressive-driving program, pays his fine and "stays out of trouble."
Pargo was flashed May 21 in his rented Hyundai Sonata at speeds of 102 mph, 105 mph, 127 mph and 147 mph between Scottsdale Road and Shea Boulevard. As part of the deal, prosecutors tossed out the 105 and 127 mph speeds, allowing Pargo to plead guilty to 102 mph.
"But we didn't back off the top speed of 147 mph," Close said. "We encompassed that into the higher reckless-driving count so we could get jail time."
Questions had been raised over whether the Sonata could reach 147 mph. But a corporate Hyundai technician said a road test showed that the Sonata could reach that speed.

What's weird is, that this means the Sonata is faster than many
premium cars that are governed to lesser speeds including the LS460.
I mean can't you technically say if I was doing 15 over that I was also doing 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, and 14 over too?
With the soft compound quiet/smooth riding low speed rated tires on the LS they have to impose a speed limiter that, in all reality, you have no business surpassing anyway in such a car on any public road... in order to keep people from driving too fast and causing the car to go faster than the tires are certified for and then blaming the manufacturer when they have a blowout at 170mph and end up in the ICU.
I still don't care for Hyundai's interiors. I sat in their flagship model at a car show and it just seemed like 75% of an Avalon for 80% of the price. Yes it was in the same class, and cheaper but still not as nice so I just didn't see the point.

Also, like one of the upper members said, it must have taken him 2+ minutes to reach that... thats approximatley how long it took me to reach 140+ in my 91 Legend... After 120, the speedometer needle moved so sloooooow compared to like 80-120.
I am betting that if he kept going that fast like that for a longer period of time, he would've blown his engine.

Isn't there some speed limitless freeway in Nevada or Arizona or Wyoming or something like that in the US?
