A Goodyear man clocked at a record 147 mph by speed cameras on Scottsdale's stretch of Loop 101 will spend seven days in jail and take aggressive-driving classes as part of a plea deal reached with city prosecutors.

Lawrence Pargo, 27, originally pleaded not guilty to misdemeanor charges of endangerment, reckless driving and excessive speed, and he could have spent six months in jail.

But when Scottsdale police arrested him May 26, he described his actions as "the stupidest of all time" and praised the cameras for catching him.



Under the deal, he pleaded guilty to reckless driving, endangerment and criminal speed, and will pay a $1,239 fine. He also faces a year of probation and 30 days in jail.

But Caron Close, Scottsdale city prosecutor, said 23 days will be suspended if Pargo attends an aggressive-driving program, pays his fine and "stays out of trouble."

Pargo was flashed May 21 in his rented Hyundai Sonata at speeds of 102 mph, 105 mph, 127 mph and 147 mph between Scottsdale Road and Shea Boulevard. As part of the deal, prosecutors tossed out the 105 and 127 mph speeds, allowing Pargo to plead guilty to 102 mph.

"But we didn't back off the top speed of 147 mph," Close said. "We encompassed that into the higher reckless-driving count so we could get jail time."

Questions had been raised over whether the Sonata could reach 147 mph. But a corporate Hyundai technician said a road test showed that the Sonata could reach that speed.

Wow! Musta been the V6 Sonata unless he had a really strong tailwind or downhill helping, LOL!

Anyone still doubting Hyundai's credibility?

Some of the highest quality and speed.

What's weird is, that this means the Sonata is faster than many
premium cars that are governed to lesser speeds including the LS460.

Maybe he put one of those home brew "portable" nitrous systems on it, like in those dodge neon rental videos, hahaha

I'm confused - can you really get two speeding tickets from the same short span of time? I mean to me that's like a cop following behind me quietly and watching me go 10 over on one road and then 30 seconds later 12 over on another road and then 30 seconds later not come to a complete stop, and then he finally switches his lights on and writes me TWO speeding tickets, one for each of those speeds, plus the rolling stop.

I mean can't you technically say if I was doing 15 over that I was also doing 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, and 14 over too?

Top speeds are, in most any premium car these days, a function of the speed rating of the tires.

With the soft compound quiet/smooth riding low speed rated tires on the LS they have to impose a speed limiter that, in all reality, you have no business surpassing anyway in such a car on any public road... in order to keep people from driving too fast and causing the car to go faster than the tires are certified for and then blaming the manufacturer when they have a blowout at 170mph and end up in the ICU.

I still don't care for Hyundai's interiors. I sat in their flagship model at a car show and it just seemed like 75% of an Avalon for 80% of the price. Yes it was in the same class, and cheaper but still not as nice so I just didn't see the point.

The problem with speeding in those slow cars is it probably took him literally 2 minutes to hit 147 mph....You speed in a very fast car, it will take no time to hit that speed.

Thats awsome. Who ever would of thought that that little car could reach speed of 147mph. I think the company needs to put that in their ad now,lol

hhhmmm Maybe this was a publicity stunt. Something like that Toureg pulling the aircraft, a Hyundai getting a speeding ticket for 147 mph. Does anyone care the Toureg pulled a jet? Does anyone care the Hyundai got a ticket for going 147? Probably not in eithe case but it makes for good (not necessarily positive) publicity! lol

LOOP 101 FTW!! WOOT WOOT.. lol This guy was an idiot, the cameras on the 101 do not start until you pass the "Shea Blvd" exit heading north bound, he should of been going southbound after he past the shea exit.

Also, like one of the upper members said, it must have taken him 2+ minutes to reach that... thats approximatley how long it took me to reach 140+ in my 91 Legend... After 120, the speedometer needle moved so sloooooow compared to like 80-120.


I am betting that if he kept going that fast like that for a longer period of time, he would've blown his engine.

That's nothing, I have buddies at the track who regularly clock over 150 mph down here in Mexico City right after they leave the track (no one on the beltways at 1 a.m. in the morning). I regularly hit 100 mph on the way home, too, though I am computer limited.

Not that an RX300 would be doing anything remotely close to 150mph even if it wasn't computer limited, though.

Isn't there some speed limitless freeway in Nevada or Arizona or Wyoming or something like that in the US?

the 101 stretch from Scottsdale Rd. to Shea is southbound and is a downhill slope, proabably about 3-4 miles from point to point. The pavement is VERY smooth rubberized asphalt, throw in a little tailwind..............
