Exclamation Lexus SUVs really LUVs? Luxury Utility Vehicles?

Well according to them, if you go the lexus.com, all their SUVs are described as "Luxury Utility Vehicles".

I applaud them taking the ridiculous Sport name out of it. LUV may sound stupid and may not be used but I am glad Lexus is describing the trucks appropriately.

Again, LUV is not officially used while BMW does actively promote their SUVs as SAVs, which I can agree with, as until the new 2007 X5, they had little utility, thus being an accurate description.

I get tired of manufacturer's marketing departments trying to create new acronyms to differentiate their products from the competition.
I mean what's next? The ES is more luxury oriented and the 3-series is more sport oriented so do we need to give them a new segregated classification as well? Think how many 'categories' of cars we would have to create it we segregated each size and price class of vehicle on sport/luxury or alternate door/body configurations.

Marketing departments are just afraid that the word "SUV" is getting a bad association so they're trying to create their own. Just seems needless to me.

SUVs originally had the name 'sport' in them because they were utility vehicles that were capable of participating in the sport of off-roading. The word sport doesn't always = road racing or drag racing... certainly didn't mean that when the term SUV came out, anyway.

I am probably one of the few Lexus owners who can call their vehicle an SUV, since one of the primary uses of my vehicle is for drag racing. However, what I do is light years far from normal.

Thus, I agree with 1SICKLEX.

The "three journeys" Lexus DVD sent out a few years ago called the RX/GX/LX "luxury utility vehicles" -- sounds pretty good to me actually. LUV those vehicles!

The sport in sport utility vehicle was never about the vehicle being sporty.

It was about a vehicle being big enough to take people interested in sports and all their gear around, whether it's kayaks, scuba gear, golf bags, skate board, pads, hockey gear, etc. which sedans don't cut it for.

I understand Lexus wanting to call them luxury utility vehicles, but the acronym 'luv' is just a bit barf-inducing for me. And BMW's 'sav' was just plain stupid, but probably 'worked'. Then of course we have CUVs now, but what Mazda has a CX7 and CX9 - are they both CUVs or is one an SUV!?

I think the whole thing is stupid. I call it SUV because that is what the industry calls it. I don't call the BMW SAV, and I'm not going to call my RX330 LUV either. I don't buy into the little names. The other reason why I call the SUV an SUV is to differ it from a truck.

i kind of agree with you, chris. i can really care less how they call it, it's just a name and some fancy "i am special" stuff from them imho. suv is what the industry call them, and that's enough for me
