Default Project car?

Hey CL, my and my father are looking for a good project car. However, we are fairly new to all of this and need some suggestions. We want it to be an import and we want it to be able to handle some power. In that case I was thinking either a Supra or Nissan 240 or 300. Please, if you have any suggestions please throw them out. Or any links would be helpful too!

Thanks,
Elliott

what skill level would you rate yourself?

do you want to rebuild a motor? Motor swap? bodywork? drift/drag/show/circuit car? street legal? anything????

also, a rough budget would be nice.

Add a turbo, or rebuild an already turbo'ed engine?

Rebuilding a 2JZ-GTE isn't economical unless you plan on more than about 800 whp. You can get a complete short block from Toyco for $2100, and it's easily good to 800 whp with no additional effort required. You'd be hard pressed to buy the parts and get the machine work done even if you owned a short block already for that price. I actually have this dilemna sitting in my garage - dead GTE short block, needs thrust washers and rebuild...almost not worth it.

Ok so then what would you suggest? I was looking at a non turboed 300zx or a 240sx.

300zx is a PITA to work on since engine space is so tight. no love for the RX7? very mod friendly and they like rebuilds (apex seals )

a 240 is a good choice but it depends onthe motor since SR20 parts are rare and expensive (oem and aftermarket, but its growing) and KA motors cheaper but arent as "mod friendly"

and SW20 is also a good choice even tho it is a little cramped, the 3S-GTE motor has TONS of parts available at reasonable prices int he US.

Like the 300ZX the SW20/21 are a PITA to work on... Between a 240sx and 300zx, I think the 240 is definitely eariser to work on although, as mentioned, mods are not as plentful for them as some other vehicles. An FD with an LS1 would be fun...

FD's with LS1's are deadly quick, mid 11's startin'.

So just a rebuild and a turbo?
Eh, a S14 conversion with a 2JZ-GTE driveline would be pretty damn pimp if you could pull it off. Dunno if you could stuff it in there though, not all that familiar with the dimensions.

oh yea, just realized that i forgot that small quick little car that you can get basic parts for cheap

AE86 Corolla GTS.

turbo 4A-GE baby

or you could shove a F20C (s2000 motor) and 6spd into it for a stronger starting platform.

Wow this is so confusing..I don't really like the RX7, I like the MR2 and the 240...Now I just need to figure out what to do with them..

Edit: Just saw that corolla and I don't like it too much.

MR2=3SGTE swap/transplant+build

240=built/turbo KA, SR20 Swap, RB series swap (even harder partswise), LS1/2 V8 swap, or 2jz

theres always the Supra
