Just an added note:
Put the words, "VIN Numbers", with the quotes into a search engine and you'll see what I mean.

My point is simply this: Whether you use "VIN" or "VIN Number" they are both considered acceptable!! Calm down!

I disagree. Just because the error is made so often, both in print and via the spoken word, that doesn’t make it acceptable, anymore that any misuse of English somehow becomes proper grammar by virtue of the mistake being made by so many.

I agree it’s no big deal. We’re free to write and speak as we want, but these redundancies (Vehicle Indentification Number Number) often reflect one’s educational challenges, and I believe they should be avoided. I certainly make my own grammatical errors from time to time, but I hate to do it because I feel it makes me look stupid.
