Exclamation Another I must be getting old threads.......

As much as I live and breathe the mod/auto/show/club segment etc, why do I feel more and more I would want a nice older 356 or another vintage car?

In today's mod segment, well, EVERYONE has a mod, from LEDs to pep boys to HREs on their 911. I drive around and there are now a LOT of modded cars (most done totally wrong) out there.

I've been doing a lot of reading on older cars and trying to bring my knowledge up and its amazing how back then it was TRULY about racing and then selling that car to the public. With so many laws and the expense of racing today and safety regulations, it so different though some car makers try to soldier on! THen they are truly RARE to see. And there was almost NO IMITATION. Car makers made cars that REPRESENT THEM. No 300Cs or Altimas that look like your car back in the day.

Add to this, IMO, most all new cars are either
1. Ugly to me
2. Huge for me
3. Or look alike

And I am starting to think I much rather me drive a car ugly to me (think Bangle) that a car that looks like something else or is similar.

I dunno, not that I feel the need to go out there and buy a bright red corvette but I dunno....things have changed...

I actaully really agree with you. I was just talking to someone the other day at the coffee house about cars and he brought up that he's looking for a fun car but theres been such a homoginzation of styles that hes actaully looking at a porsche speederster kit car.

However, its all the things about owning a vintage car that make you not only truely appreciate it, but it also gives you a newfound appreciation of the current cars being offered. A vintage car is something that I think everyone who loves cars should own. I know when I have a son him and I will restore a old vintage car together to not only have father-son bonding, but also give him an appreciation for the automobile.

As long as they're not the 'new' retro designs, I would by far prefer to see a genuine vintage design, not a new car copying the old.

My parents gave me their old Jaguar XJS with the 12 cyl engine. Beautiful car but the car sat around for so long it needs LOTS of work. I was pretty enthused about it until I got into the repair. Geeze the english engineering is horrible. I just try to remember how great the car felt when I drove it before its age caught up with it. I agree with you about unique cars.

So many of today's cars look similar. I love my new G35 but it looks like a cross between a porsche and the old 280Z. That's why I love my SC so much, not many cars look like it.

There are several vintage cars I would love to have.
Several vintage Jags
MB SL Gullwing
Original Mustang with modern drivetrain, original just doesn't have a sporting nature.
Vette Stingray
Ferrari 250GT
Several others

These were cars that stirred the soul. Inspired passion and made you feel alive.

If you buy an old car though you usually have to put up with:

- no airbags
- no ABS / traction control
- sometimes terrible brakes
- cracking vinyl/plastic/leather
- hard to find and/or very expensive parts
- possible reliability issues

But I definitely agree that there's a lot of similar bland vehicles out there.

91-94 turbo 911 for me.

Classic yet modern (besides, lack of cupholders). Best of both worlds.

And i agree with the Bangle sentiment. I think ugly and different is better than boring copy cat.

I would kill for a 964 3.8 but sadly we didn't get them here......
