I can virtually guarantee this is a modified 5.0L 2UR-FSE V8 that, in production form, will soon see service in future Lexus models such as the LS600h.

I expected Lexus to move to the new engine for the Daytona prototypes, but I didn't know they would do it so quickly! I thought at the very least it would happen after the IS350 GT2s started racing in ALMS.

for le mans youre not allowed to use the 5.0 in the IS since its not a real production model (yet) so you have to stick with the 350

Exactly my thoughts! I would rather drop in an engine like this (with the tranny ofcourse) into my car over Turboing the existing 4.0L engine any day.

Lexus Planning Hybrid SuperCar
Lexus is planning a hybrid version of its forthcoming LF-A supercar, according to a published report. It will likely use the same powerplant as the Lexus 600h sedan, according to the U.K.'s Autocar magazine. The 5.0-liter V8 coupled with an electric motor will produce a total output of 435 horsepower, the magazine said. The car will likely be capable of reaching 60 mph in under 4.0 seconds, and hitting a top speed of over 200 mph. The Autocar report also indicates Toyota has decided to drop the car's planned V10 engine in favor of a V8. The move is a part of an effort to closely align the car to F1 racing, which recently transitioned from V10 to V8 engines. Toyota is hoping to capitalize on its major involvement in F1, and is expected to use the car at next year's Japanese Grand Prix as the official pace car. The event coincides with the 2007 Tokyo Motor Show, where the car is expected to be unveiled.

I have a feeling they'll release the LF-A with a V10 option as well.

huh? that news about lf-a..... v8 hybrid similar to the ls600hl, pushing ONLY 430hp...... and going for 100k? sorry man, but i really don't know if that car will sell and "compete" with other exotics out there....

most people buying exotic cars they would want to see high rev v10 i suppose, and 500hp sounds right, 430 is nothing. the 460 engine is already 380hp. modify it to 5L and retune and you can already get 400+hp....

Very disheartening news if it's true. They've already spent all that money into developing this awesome V10. Why drop this production-ready engine just because FIA changed their rules on the race engines? A V10 sports car...that sounds so exotic. A V8 sports car? Sounds like a Mustang GT.

I'm all for a Lexus hybrid sports car though. Always wondered why they didn't pursue production of the Volta concept. It would've set such a definitve statement that shows the world how much far ahead Toyota/Lexus is of its hybrid wannabe competitors.

. . . & the Volta concept looks WAY better than the LF-A concept too, which I still consider unattractive in it's current form

Both look "good" in their own ways IMO, but the Volta definitely looks a lot more exotic, being mid-engined and Italian-designed. Given the choice, I'll take the Volta design any day.

Sadly, Lexus is all about their L-finesse design theme now, which is a good theme to begin with of course but is too smooth overall to invoke that sense of exotic-ness for a $100k+ sports car.
