Default Tuner Special: Hamann Rethinks the Gallardo Spyder

Wing doors and an aerodynamic body kit are among the modifications on the Hamann Gallardo Spyder.

I believe I can fly. I believe I can touch the sky. I think about it every night and day.

The Hamann Gallardo Spyder.

Date posted: 08-10-2006

LAUPHEIM, Germany — Hamann has made over another Italian exotic. This time, the German tuner has transformed the Lamborghini Gallardo Spyder, with a modest power boost and a major face-lift.

The aero body kit begins with a front spoiler and side sills and adds a three-piece rear spoiler, wing and diffuser. The components can be ordered in carbon-kevlar or fiberglass.

The real treat — a Hamann signature patterned after such current and previous Lambo models as the Murcielago, the Diablo and the Countach — is the addition of wing doors that flip up at an angle.

Inside, an 11-piece kit with decorative carbon-fiber trim gives the Spyder an even more exotic look.

To provide a little performance kick, Hamann offers two types of sports mufflers, including a system with quad stainless-steel pipes and metal catalysts. Hamann also recalibrates the engine ECU, bumping output to 550 horsepower and torque to 406 pound-feet. Top speed climbs slightly to 199 mph.

Other modifications include sport brakes and a choice of 19- and 20-inch alloy wheels shod with Z-rated performance tires.

For more information, see the Hamann Web site.

What this means to you: A lovely companion to the Hamann Ferrari F430 Spider, for fans of the Raging Bull.

Hamann can keep their aero kit - I'll take my Spyder stock.

Those wheels don't fit in with the exotic rest of the car.

I also feel the Gallardo is a car that is best left mostly stock. I say mostly because I wouldn't keep stock wheels on any car regardless of what it is. The Gallardo body is so sweet and slick I wouldn't ruin it with body cladding....unless they were very subtle.
