Whats so funny is this car competes with the Euro Accord in Japan. Where Honda badges it here as an Acura TSX, Toyota was going to badge this car a SCION in America.

The big wigs decided a not sporty looking or driving 4 door would kill the Scion theme, so they dropped that idea.
lol, Toyota would move it downmarket, Honda moves it upmarket.

Avensis is Passat class fighter that is doing ok/good in Europe. It's chasis is what Scion tC is based on.
Of course, it is much more luxurious inside, with best-in-europe-toyota materials used everywhere.
It is FWD, with multilink from Celica at the back.

It is available with Petrol engines 1.6 110hp, 1.8 129hp, 2.0 DI 150hp, 2.4 DI 164hp, Diesel engines 2.0 126hp, 2.2 150hp and 2.2 177hp DCAT. DCAT is the most poweful 4cly diesel in passanger car in Europe, and cleanest diesel in its class (DCAT).

New are front and back lights, front mask, mirrors with integrated LED turn signals on the outside, and mp3, steering wheel, slightly different materials, better control of the nav inside.

Engines are unchanged except for 2.0 D4D which got bump in power to 126hp from 116, and more torque. Suspension is tuned for more sport and comfort at the same time.

all in all its Toyota's flagship in Europe. Its "goodwill" warranty is same as in Lexus, only one for Toyota in Europe (as in things that are really not Toyota's fault, but they will fix it anyway within xx time frame).

Avensis is positioned in Europe the same way as the Camry is in North America, i.e. a notch below the ES.

Well, they "used to", but now the Avensis is the closest thing to Camry in Europe. The Camry is just to wide for the mainstream European taste.

Is this car the foreign Avalon? I am not familiar with the model.

No, this is an exclusive car/platform for Europe.
