Default Corvette Blue Devil project reportedly now called Sting Ray

Corvette Blue Devil project reportedly now called Sting Ray
AutoWeek | Published 06/07/06, 9:18 am et

Maybe this is why the folks at General Motors can slyly smile and plausibly deny a super-powered Corvette Blue Devil is in the works. We hear Blue Devil (allegedly chosen to get the attention of GM CEO and Duke grad Rick Wagoner) is no longer the working name of the car but has been replaced by the more Corvette-centric Sting Ray moniker. Production of the $100,000 Blue, er, Sting Ray, with a supercharged 7.0-liter 600-hp V8 under its carbon fiber hood, could come as early as 2007.

I honestly don't know why someone would buy this. Especially since Lingenfelter Performance offers a NA (naturally aspriated) upgraded engine package which produces 616 bhp. And if you think that's impressive, check out the price, it's just a tad under 6 grand for the package.

IMO much better deal than the "StingRay" mentioned above

It'll become a collector's item for sure.

Limited edition OEM packages like this typically offer:
Better resale value
Better street drivability
Better reliability
and above all, I doubt that the stingray will simply be a Z06 with 100 more ponies. It will most likely be made even lighter weight, and made to handle even better - things you don't get with the Lingenfelter package.

Plus, a properly tuned supercharger can add a lot more than just 100 peak horsepower - it could be tuned to also dramatically improve the flat response of the LS7's existing kinda sorta 'peaky' torque curve. (well, peaky for a an American V8, anyway).

Not for $100,000... How rediculous a price it is.

The Z06 was already only outperformed by one production vehicle on Nurburbring - the 440 thousand dollar Porsche Carrera GT.

If this new Vette can top the Carrera GT for less than 1/4 of the price - then I'd say it's a relative STEAL for somebody who's looking to buy a top of the line exotic performance car.

I agree...
For the performance and drivability sure beats Ford GT which cost 140k.

I say it will beat out the Carrerra GT in performance and handeling. It will eat the Enzo for lunch as well. The Z06 already does sub 4 second zero to 60 and tops out at 200 mph. I can only imagine this beast. Lutz has done it again. Give this man Time magazine person of the year

Yeah this was posted on another board I frequent a couple days ago and I kept intending to post a link here. LS9, supercharged, 650 horsepower, sub 3000 pound target weight.

That car will be insane.

I'd take an OEM car over a tuner-modified one any day of the week. GM has a lot more knowledge and R&D rescources than Lingenfelter. Either one can produce a 600+ hp car, but I'd guess that GM may be able to do it in a more relaible manner. Also, there will be more after-sale dealer support available for a purely stock car.

The Z06 is already such an amazing bargain. If the new GT500 is already this far behind the Z06, the Stingray is going to wipe the floor with whatever else Shelby and Ford can come up with for the stang.

Default Captured! Corvette Blue Devil (Stingray?) Mule In The Flesh

Future Vehicles October 4th, 2006 12:37 AM

This might look like an ‘ordinary’ Z06 with a funky hood scoop, but the crack shooters from Brenda Priddy’s crew, with with their long lenses and tuned ears, tell us this Corvette is anything but ordinary.
Shooter Chris Doane claims that the sound coming from the engine could only be a supercharged 6.2-liter V-8, and our sources speculate that this Corvette is pushing nearly 650-horsepower! And when the Corvette SS goes to production– expect the price tag to be in the $100,000 range.

The supercharged V-8 will utilize an integrated intake manifold intercooler, and it’s expected to run a 0-60 in under 3.5 seconds. The super-hot SS will weigh even less than the Z06, utilizing more carbon fiber in the body, as well as polycarbonate material.

The 6.2-liter V-8 will be built at GM’s Performance Center in Wixom, Michigan, with annual production numbers expected to be in the 1500-2000 range. Production on this special Corvette, also known for some time as the Blue Devil, will start in the first quarter of 2008 (as a 2009 model).

As for its exact name – well, we’re hearing everything from Corvette SS, to Z07, to resurrecting the Stingray name. Don’t count out the Mako Shark name, either.

That's an evil looking car. I just hope the build quaility is at least 2X as good as a normal Vette for 2X the price.
