Default Porsche Cayman S - need some input

Again and again, my dad keeps telling me that he wants to take my LS and for me to go pick up a new car...and after a lot of talking yesterday I am REALLY considering what I should do.

I REALLY LIKE the Cayman S...

But a little worried that I will regret not getting the 997 C4S.

There is about a 60+ HP differences and about 30k difference in price....

Any CL member out there with a Porsche? What do you all think of it? I am looking for something that is fun to drive!

Hey OGS,

I've been following Porsche passionately since I first saw a 993TT as a kiddo. Porsche has been experimenting (not for the best at times...i.e. Cayenne) with new products to its line. The Cayman has already started turning a lot of heads with its mid-engine design. Some of the "riing" numbers that are being published have shown it to be immensely fast with lots of potential when the tuners get their hands on them.

The best way IMO to answer your question is to get out there and test drive them both. Unfortunately the Cayman will be released in January; however, you might be able to go see one in person at the local P-dealership.

As for me, there is nothing sexier than a wide-***, and as many other P-philes have said, "at the end of the day, it's still not a 911."

Best of luck in your purchase and if anything POST PICS when you get it.

I really like tha Cayman, but if you can stretch the funds for a 997, I'd say 997.

Lucky you that you can consider either If it's me, it'd be a tough choice between the 2, better handling & price of the Cayman S vs. Hp & the 911 name/tradition of the 997. . .

I am no expert, but from what I have read the Cayman is very similar to the Boxster, to the point that I would sooner stretch the money to get the 997, My favorite car to come from them in a long time since the GT2, and ooooooooooooh 959.

You said you want something fun to drive, then a better-handling car would be it- in your case, the Cayman.

For me the mid engine designe makes it a no brainer. It is more than fast enough, but the driving dynamics of the mid engine has me favor the Cayman. My feeling is there will be tons of aftermarket parts for the Cayman and since you are already starting off with a better chassis layout it should be one heck of a car all around.

The Cayman shares the Boxster platform but has a different engine, a slightly higher-quality interior, and a more rigid structure due to the fixed roof. Compared to a base Boxster, it will cost more, handle and steer better, run 0-60 a little faster, seal out the weather more, flex less, and have less road and engine noise.

A new Cayman is a LOT of cash, too...both to buy and insure. Only you can decide if it is worth it. For that kind of money, I would get a new GS430 or, in a sports car, an upmarket Corvette. A Porsche dealership ( trust me ) will also eat you up alive in parts and service once the warranty and any free service coverage is gone.

went by the dealership today to check ou the new cayman. the salesman said actually the cyaman will be more a volume car compared to the 911. they are expecting several more per month in allocation.
cayman has the same interior as 911. and is supposed to handle and drive easier since its mid engine. carreras are very tricky to drive at the limit if youre not used to them. u will find the rear end come around the front end if youre not careful. plus the cayman is cheaper. get the cayman. 911 is for poseurs.

Some people may not be able to tell apart the Cayman & the various 911's

They all look like . . . Porsche's

personaly I wouldnt buy any porsche thats not a 911, I dont consider them as porsches I guess, I would go with a audi RS4 before the caymen. its faster, better looking and will out handle a caymen on the track, and the interior is just out of this world, its also about the same price maybe alittle more expensive, but well worth the price diffrence and its a 4 door :P

indeed. a Coxster.

it's said that it kind of....doesn't achieve it's full potential. Clarkson was talking about how it's too perfectly in the middle between a 911 and a Boxster, so the car feels a bit...restrained in ways. and everything is an option...the "brilliant" navigation is an option, rear wiper is an option, ceramic brakes are an option, metallic paint is an option... etc. etc. and that raises the prices a bit too close to a 911...<<in which case comes the question, "why didn't you get a 911?"

In that case, you would just LOVE the old " Porsche " 914 with its air-cooled VW Beetle-based engine,

I agree with you about not only the RS4 but Audis in general....IMO as well as yours they are better buys today then Porsches. Hard to beat Porsche, though , for a pure sports-car experience, though Corvettes and Vipers easily out-power them in the HP-per-dollar ratio.
