Default Spy Shots: 2007 Volvo S80

The 2007 Volvo S80 will make its debut at the Detroit Auto Show in January. Expect brand new engines. A 3.2L N/A and Turbo V6 will replace the Inline turbo 5 and the now discontinued inline twin turbo 6. Also expect to see the Yamaha developed V8 engine from the XC90 make its way into the S80(as you can see from the badge on the trunk of the spy shot below). AWD, 6-speed auto, 4C Active Suspension will also appear on this new model as well along with more standard and optional equipment to help push the S80 upmarket.

Very nice... I can't wait to see it in person. I'm definitely a fan of the "boxy but good" company.

Default Yawn...

It doesn't look any different than current Volvos....

This brand continues to leave me unimpressed. The Turbo models have power but of the models I've driven the ride feels hard, the transmission seems undecided and the interiors are just plain odd. I understand that customer satisfaction is on the wane.

you mean the 850 T-5R and the R?

quick history lesson on the "R", the R originaly came from the Volvo's R-sport division, which was formed in the 50's to support the Monte-Carlo rally, it wasn't really big thru out the 60's and 70's they did support the SCCA Trans-AM teams, and some odd rally teams here and there, and once a while crank out parts that only the hardcore enthusiasts know about, like a 2.0L engine based on the production B20 with 16v head that was able to produce 240hp back in the 6/70s. In the 80's they came with the big break in Grp A racing with their 242 victory, then slowly died down, then the 850 BTCC came along, then it died down. Then Volvo sold it due to it wasn't really making any money.

useless history lesson on the meaning of the R.

The front looks like a VW/Audi. The slanted nose and the traditional rectangular Volvo grille aren't exactly... "seemless"

Doesnt do anythig for me. The styling isnt anythig marvelous... its just another Volvo. I dont know if that is Volvo's intention, as they all look the same but to me I would expect something better for the price.

You've got to be kidding me.

Those were the ugliest cars driven by the worst drivers who thought they were saving the planet by driving something so 'sensible' (at 30mph in the left lane on the interstate).

Spied: Volvo S80

Here's the first shot of the new Volvo S80, completely undisguised as it underwent testing in South Africa. The S80 is due for its first public showing at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2006. Borne by a stretched version of Ford's C1 platform, the S80 will offer a choice of front- or all-wheel drive. A range of diesel and gas engines are expected, including a 163-hp four-cylinder, a 209-hp five-cylinder, a 272-hp six-cylinder and a 299-hp V-8 version. The new Volvo will also get a new safety system Co-Driver, which includes radar sensors and audible collision warnings linked to the Brake Assist. If a collision is imminent, it will apply extra braking pressure, tighten the seatbelts for optimum restraint and prepare the airbags for deployment. --Hans G. Lehmann/ Hidden Image
