Default Guys opinion on radar detector.

Ok guys i'm in the market to puchause a radar detector, and yes i have asked u guys before about the V-1, and just about everyone of u guys agree that V-1 was the choice. My concern is does the windshield of the GS430 prevent the V-1 to work at its optimum peak. Also would this website be a credible source for info ( www.1radardetector.com ), and r they rite about the V-1 rated at 9.2 thats below escort, and bell.

I just drove up to Michigan and back for the weekend. I figure for the price of a V1 or a Passport X50, I could get 2 speeding tickets and pay whatever insurance premiums for less than what that radar detector would cost me.

(I didn't get any tickets btw )

I was on your boat before and yes it's hard to pick, I went for v1 and after almost 3 yrs of using it, I tell you, those test gives points for things that once on the real world it would be almost irrelevant.. test conditions are usually not quite same as your daily driving.. sometimes youll get better performance than what the tests tell you as well as other times where the radar will completely miss an officer <im talking for all radars> the bottom line is, whichever you pick in the market right now is going to do a good job doing what they are designed to do BUT at the end, is YOU who should be the one watching out, using the radar as a tool to back you up.. I liked the v1 in the fact that can be upgraded, and the sucker is tough as hell, i have dropped that **** so many times, it has survived a MAJOR crash <head on onto a wall at +/- 65mph> and so on.. it paid itself a loonnnng time ago, and yes im not going to lie, I've got ONE ticked in the past 3 yrs, YET it was a situation in which if I didnt have the radar, I probably would have paid twice as much for that ticket.. without it, I probably would have had over 10 tickets in the same time period..

btw as of the windshield, as long as you dont tint <which is illegal in most states anyways> your windshield with a metallic film, youll fine.. I hope this helps, if you have any specific q's, just PM me, ill be more than glad to help you out

Default V-1

I have the V-1 and a friend of mine has the passport 8500...we were driving to the Taste of Lexus event 2 weeks ago and when my radar detector went off I knew I had to slow down, sure enough, around the bend there was Mr. State Trooper (already had someone pulled over, but had I ripped around that turn at double the speed limit for sure he would've noticed. My friend commented and said "WOW good range on that thing - I don't think mine wouold've given me that much time."

That's about as real world as you can get. I won't use another radar detector other than my V-1.

Whatever brand you use, be sure you don't use it in a state that outlaws them.

http://www.rdrop.com/users/tedpet/radar.htm

In those states ( DEFINITELY in my home state of VA ), state police use devices that can detect the detectors. They can be impounded in some cases....and the bans have generally been upheld by the courts.

There have been many posts and much talk in CL about this issue.

I've had the Passport Escort 8500 x50 for about 3 months or so and it has saved me a few times already. I don't know the exact range off-hand but it's given me plenty of advance warning from signals coming in either direction. I've also heard/read great things about the Valentine as well.
Good luck with your search and future purchase.

Thanks guys, this is goin to b a hard one to choose. I had the escort about 3 yrs ago, and i was happy with it, but i really wanted something else, so i gave the escort away, but now i'm ready for a new one. Escort has a great package, and v-1 has upgrades in the future, so this is a tough one, i keep u guys posted on this.

V1

why would you get anything else?
just get it - you'll know the difference once you own one.

Is it true that the V1 can't detect a certain band of radar that the 8500 X50 can? I thought I remember hearing this somewhere, please correct me if I'm wrong because I'm gonna get one for myself as well.

well i can't say for sure, but unless i see real proof documents, i won't trust it

of all the reviews and such i have seen, v1 wins over the passport on radar detection -- at least the radars that cops use, haha

POP radar, but the new models come with it and the older ones can be updated it.. IF it makes you feel better, they can't use a POP reading for a ticket

V1 all the way. I have had both Passport and V1 and the V1 performs better.

Alright I figured out what it was... the older V1's don't have POP detection..? I'm not really familiar with any of this stuff. If you have a cellphone question, or a home theater question, or for the most part a car question, no problem. But not radar detectors.
