almost every SUV from japan has a V8 option as do most of the mid-large size Sedans. the reason you see mostly I4-I6-and V6 is that gas is a LOT more expensive there. also, the japanese motor industry got its start making small, fuel efficient cars back in the 70s. thats why there is no other company on the market that can match their advancement on smaller engines. the upside to this for "us" is that most of the technology that they have perfected in their small motors juss makes our (my) big 4L lump of an engine that much better.

I know there's a "gentlemen's agreement" in the Japanese automotive industry that you shouldn't go over 276 hp, if that's what you're thinking of?

That agreement no longer exists either.

Getting stuck in traffic at least 2 hours a day will get high displacement motors off everyones list fast. Even if you could afford the gas or extra tax for for owning a larger displacement vehicle, where would you go to get gas if you ran out while stuck in bumper to bumper in Tokyo? Hybrid makes more sense over there.

japan has a displacement tax, for every amunt of displacement your car has you have to pay a certain amount of tax for it every year, so most people buy fuel effiecient low displacement cars for getting around
