carfax is good for telling you when it was bought, where and when it was registered to different owners etc. also will make sure it's not salvaged title. I wouldn't really count on it for info about crashes, bodywork etc.
check with Lexus dealer to run service history.

Carfax will not tell you everything
i had a 200o toyota 4runner
i got hit from behind and did some major damage ...dont worry im all right although my neck still hurts always feel like there is a crack i just can get ..just cracked my neck now
anyway
before i bought my GS i did a carfax on it and just for a goof did one on my 4 runner
all it said about the 4runner was that the mileage was accurate and nothing about the damage
use it ..but make sure all the VIN numbers match on the car

ANY SELF self repair will not be recorded, unless they are dealer work, insurance claim etc etc...
they best you can do is check the car itself. under the hood, door jams, pull out rear truck panel and check inside see if there are any damage or signs of reqair. major damage is easy to tell.
Good luck.

Carfax is not that grear like everyone said because anything people do on the side do not show up. Still, if you are spending several thousands on a car, $20-$25 is good insurance that nothing strange shows up.
Thanks guys, I already have my lexus I just spend the 24 bucks on a report to get peace of mind. Better knowing then not knowing and finding out in the future.

and when people say check for paint work, it's not just looking for obvious color differences. Run your fingers around the edges, they should feel smooth. Bumpyness is a sign of overspray or compound. Make sure the vin stickers are there and don't have overspray or taped off lines around them (trust me they paint around these things).
As chuckb said have a lexus dealer run a history (it's free too!). It's always a plus if they've worked on the car so you know it's been treated right. If all this checks out and you really like the car, then the carfax would help seal the deal. Happy hunting!

Pole Position
carfax doesn't do too much at all. My car was wrecked, actually I have had damage to 2 of my cars, the one I bought and the silver one and it doesn't show up in carfax unless it is major etc. I think the lexus I have was in a moderate head on hit somehow because the bumper reinforcement, new raidator etc had to be ordered but lexus fixed it themselves, make sure you check the lexus service records and also get someone to look to see if it has been repainted anywhere

CarFax is JUNK and their customer service is horrible. They try to catch people on the terms and conditions and they don't stand by their guarantee.

You should use AUTOCHECK , whom I think even CarFax tries to get their info from. And AutoCheck has something like $25 for two months unlimited. And you can renew every two months.
That's much better than CarFax's "deals", IMHO. I would never, ever, ever recommend CarFax to anyone.

they used to be ok but now they are just stupid..... a lot of times they can't track problems on the car especially accidents... i probably will still do it just for the heck, but won't rely on it big time
