Took my RX in for the brake light recall, and got an '05 ES as a loaner. While driving, I was wondering if Lexus did away w/ DRL's for '05 because I didn't see my DRL's on when I pulled up to a car at a light. After further investigation, I found the light stalk labeled "DRL on/off". What an excellent new feature!
Could someone remind me again why it's a good idea to turn off my DRL's. I'm too lazy to do a search since, on first glance, it seems a marvelously bad idea.
I dunno if its going to be available on upcoming Lexus's, but my Moms 04 Camry has the DRL On/Off feature and the Automatic headlight on/off feature. Thats probably why the ES has it since they more than likely share more parts than your RX even though built off the same platform.
DRL's make sense in states (like mine) that have the idiotic lights-with-wiper laws on that mandate headlights with wiper use. Having them on all the time, of course, will prevent a ticket for non -compliance.
But...the real problem with DRL's is not the lights themselves but the fact that these laws never should have been passed in the first place. They need to be repealed. Anyone who cannot tell a car coming or going, or who cannot see a car without its headlights on in broad daylight. rain or not, IMO does not deserve a license and should not be driving.

Yeah...state law. Passed it about 4 or 5 years ago. Whenever visibility is less than 500 feet or the wipers are turned on, the headlights MUST be on. A police officer cannot stop you simply for that alone, but if he/she notices that the lights are off under these conditions, an additional citation can be written up if you are being ticketed (or warned) about somethig else. I believe they refer to that as primary and secondary-infraction laws.
From what I know of this law, it originated with the same anti-car crowd who keeps getting speed bumps, 4-way stops, barricades, etc....put up.
DRL's, of course, get around this problem by having them on continuously so you don't have to worry about turning them on and off with the wipers....or forgetting to do do.
Could you just see intermittent wipers with an automatic headlight hook-up that would shut the headlights on and off with each intermittent stroke of the wiper blade? That would be HILARIOUS

I totally agree with that. If you can't see a car coming or going, then maybe you shouldn't be driving. In California they just passed a law that says if you're windshield wipers are on, then your headlights have to be on also.

Sounds similiar to ours. And Arnold SIGNED it? Or did they just have enough votes to pass it over his veto?

So do cops ever ticket for it? I doubt it, cause here in NY it has been law since 98, I think, and people still drive with their lights off in the pouring rain during the day. Great law, but good luck getting an officer to pull people over in the pouring rain to ticket them for not having their headlights on. Another failed law IMO, but with good intentions.
I think they just passed that law within the past 2 months. It was very recently in any case. If it's pouring rain, like it has been the past month here in Los Angeles, I usually turn my lights on because there's a lot of scary drivers on the road here. So I do whatever I can to have other drivers see me, you can only avoid so much! I guess if a cop REALLY wanted to pull you over for not having your lights on, then they could pretty much do it. Drivers are just getting so bad here, it gets worse and worse. But I'm sure it's like that everywhere.
