WHAT??? What Chrysler does the new Avalon look like? If anything, it look European, not American.

That's what I was thinking. I guess earlier posts would then suggest that the BMW 5 & 7 series look like Chryslers. Boy, what an insult to Chrysler's superior design.

I guess anything that is similar in size and has the same number of doors look the same to people.

Todays cars are growing further and further away from each other in styling. Everything looks totally different. Look at every decade of auto design up through the 80's and you will see that most cars shared much more similarities than modern cars do. Remember, for example, when every car essentially had circular headlights and later square or rectangular ones. They were basically standard units and thrown on every car.

I don't understand why people have said that todays cars all look the same. It doesn't make any sense.

I don't understand what the big deal is. Toyota is known to take design ques from other companys and work with it. I dont like the fact they are absolutely unimaginitve. This is not the first time, so I am used to it by now. Personally I am more interested in the quality, craftsmenship, and features of this car more than the looks.

Carmakers in those days had little or no choice. Headlight design was strictly regulated ( and pretty much mandated the old circular or rectangular incandescent sealed-beams ) until the early 1980's. Then, many restrictions were taken off, and paved the way for the square halogen sealed-beams, the removable-bulb halogens, and then the HID's and Xenon-arc lights we have today.

What REALLY irks me about some of today's lights, though, are the UGLY triangular sweep-up designs that go way back up the sides of the hood. The 2002-2005 Toyota Camry, 2002-2005 Lexus ES330, 2004-2005 Toyota Prius, 2000-2004 Ford Focus, and 2003-2005 Honda Accord are prime examples of this.
This is one of the ugliest features on today's non-Chris Bangle cars.
