Default New GTO; Head gasket issues?

http://www.ls1tech.com/forums//showthread.php?t=224517

Bad head gaskets in 2 of the cars on this thread, the first by a guy that doesn't even push his car. What are the odds this is coincidental? Further down, another mentions his new car was low on coolant and he smelled antifreeze, and worries. Scary stuff.

ACK!

Well seeing as how it's the same engine in many many many GM cars (LS1), and the fact that I haven't heard anything else about bad head gaskets in LS series motors, I'm not gonna go and blame it on the GTO. It just may be a coincidence but it's fishy none the less. What could possibly explain these LS1's blowing gaskets compared to all the other vettes, F bodies, and GTOs?

I posted this on another baord and someone mentioned it might be a supplier / material issue rather than a design defect, since the other LS1 ebgines in other models don't have this problem. GM may need to question who's making the head gaskets for the GTO's motor.

Uncommon problems in a (relatively) common engine (esp one with the longevity of this particular engine in it's various iterations, i.e., more than 50 YEARS!) suggest isolated issue such as part supply, as Dan posts.

I vote we give GM the benefit of a BIG doubt.............

That's sad.

Toyota had similar issues with the 7M-GE found in the MkIII Supras and Cressidas. Can't imagine the manufacturer torquing the head to 55#'s if I recollect.
